This volume aims to raise awareness of the underlying complexities concerning student writing in the universities. The authors address a series of theoretical as well as practical questions regarding the literacies required of students in Higher Education, from the perspective of both students themselves and of their tutors. The research described here intends to move beyond the narrow confines of current policy debates and the quick fix solutions of writing manuals, to explore the epistemological, cultural, historical and theoretical bases of such writing. Issues addressed include the nature of competing epistemologies that underlie the writing process and the varying degrees of explicitness about what academic writing entails; ways of challenging the institutional marginalisation of academic writing as teaching, learning, and research practice; what counts as knowledge and how far it is mediated by the rhetorical conventions of one culture; to what extent the challenging of such rhetorical conventions is itself a crucial epistemological issue. Writing, in this volume, then, is addressed in terms of academic literacy practices involving relations of power, issues of identity and theories of knowledge.

There is a difference between obtaining a wide variety of knowledge, and actually learning how to use that knowledge, and until you understand that difference it will be difficult for you to learn. Let's start with obtaining information. You go to class, you take in information, and then you go away and forget it, as soon as you leave the classroom. That is not learning. I am not sure what I would call that, but it is definitely not learning.So, how do you learn? This book will provide insights into discovering what kind of a learner you are, how to read critically, how to think critically, some of the ways to improve your memory, how to take more effective notes in class, and how to think about the notes you take so that you can become more successful when writing an exam. This book is written in a very informal tone on purpose. It was written to simulate a conversation that we might have if you came to see me during my office hours. It was also written with the intention that you, the student, would interact with the book. It has questions along the way, that you should answer before continuing to read the next section, to ensure that you are understanding the main concepts.This book is designed to be of assistance to first-year university and college students, like you, as you navigate your new learning environment. It was written with you in mind. I tried to anticipate the questions that you might ask about the concepts, based on the questions that my students have asked me over the years. This book was written, in an effort, to get you to understand that it is important to interact with what you are learning in your classes. It was written with you in mind. In order to get the most benefit from using the strategies discussed in this book, you have to make the decision that you want to learn how to learn. It is up to you how much you learn at university, and in college. It is not up to your instructors, your friends, or your parents. I hope you take the time to read with the goal of learning.

Canadian universities have an ongoing history of colonialism and racism in this white-settler society. Racialized students (Indigenous, Black and students of colour), who would once have been forbidden from academic spaces and who still feel out of place, must navigate these repressive structures in their educational journeys. Through the genres of essay, art, poetry and photography, this book examines the experiences of and effects on racialized students in the Canadian academy, while exposing academia’s lack of capacity to promote students’ academic well-being.
