This special issue of Studies in Law, Politics and Society contains two sections, focusing on the interaction between law and religion, together with the ways in which the law simultaneously enhances and inhibits projects of social change.

Trials are well known as paradigmatic legal events. Some attract wide attention; others mostly escape notice. This title brings together the work of some of the leading scholars to think about the nature, utility, and limits of trials.

This volume is part of an annually-published series of interdisciplinary research on law, with a critical focus. Research is invited on a wide range of law-related subjects, including law and inequality, feminist jurisprudence, racial oppression and law, and legal institutions and communities.

Law, like religion, provided one of the principal discourses through which early-modern English people conceptualised the world in which they lived. Transcending traditional boundaries between social, legal and political history, this innovative and authoritative study examines the development of legal thought and practice from the later middle ages through to the outbreak of the English civil war, and explores the ways in which law mediated and constituted social and economic relationships within the household, the community, and the state at all levels. By arguing that English common law was essentially the creation of the wider community, it challenges many current assumptions and opens new perspectives about how early-modern society should be understood. Its magisterial scope and lucid exposition will make it essential reading for those interested in subjects ranging from high politics and constitutional theory to the history of the family, as well as the history of law.

This volume of "Studies in Law, Politics, and Society" presents a diverse array of articles by an interdisciplinary group of scholars. Their work covers several social science disciplines as well as law. Some of the articles published in this issue examine the interactions of law and "vulnerable" populations. Here research illustrates the complex ways law can be used by those groups, as well as the impact of law on their lives. Other articles focus on indigenous groups and particular legal controversies in which they are involved. Taken together they exemplify the exciting and innovative work now being done in interdisciplinary legal scholarship.
