In Studies in Economic Reform renowned and influential Chinese scholar and politician Siwei Cheng outlines his theories for bringing economic reform to China in the context of the increasingly global economy.

The 19 speechs in this volume explain many aspects of China's market-based rural economic reforms. They were delivered primarily to groups of government or Party officials by Du Runsheng, director of the Rural Development Research Center (RDRC) of China's State Council for much of the 1980s. The book includes an introductory chapter describing the history of rural economic policy in the People's Republic of China, notes by Du Runsheng and a glossary of important Marxist and Chinese economic terms.

This volume consists of a collection of cases prepared by participants in a case-writing workshop organized for Chinese teachers and researchers by the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank. There has been a growing interest in China in the case method of teaching as it has been developed in North American business schools. The case method can be used to study the problems associated with reform and can lead to a better understanding of the costs, benefits, and practical feasibility of alternative reforms. The objective of this workshop was to train users and writers of case studies in all aspects of case development, to establish a local capacity to provide training in the development and use of cases, and to increase the stock of Chinese-language case materials on various aspects of modern Chinese development and reform issues.

This book aims to explain the secret to China’s rapid growth over the last 40 years from the viewpoint of a firsthand witness. Zheng Xinli was enrolled as a graduate student of economics 40 years ago, at a time when very few Chinese people could enroll in higher-level education, let alone graduate school. Since 1978, he has been engaged in the study of macroeconomic theory and economic policy. He has worked with the economic group of the Research Section of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the State Information Center, and the Policy Research Office of the State Planning Commission, as well as other organizations.
