Excerpt from The Sunday School Prayer Book The Book of Common Prayer contains no provision for worship in the Sunday-school, and the multitude of published liturgies would seem to be sufficient evidence that a prayer-book, especially adapted to children, is a universal want in the church. The more the Sunday-school system is perfected, the more will this want be felt. The children practically form a congregation by themselves, with a worship and teaching of their own. They need, therefore, a prayer-book of their own - not by any means as a substitute for the great manual, (any more than attendance at Sunday-school is a substitute for attendance at church,) but rather as an introduction to it - a sort of primer prayer-book, so closely resembling it in form and arrangement as to engage their interest and affection, and yet so child-like In character as to be outgrown with childhood. The difficulty of preparing such a work will be appreciated when it is considered how much it involves. In the first place, it must retain all the effective and attractive features of its model - even the familiar names. In the next place, It must be minutely accurate in doctrinal expression. If it undertakes to follow the circle of the Church year, it must unfold the panoramic lesson of the Church, and bring into view every prominent event In the life of Christ, every doctrine of the Gospel, and every particular of Christian duty. In order to be effective and attractive, it must be constantly changeable, animated. Interesting, and inspiriting, and yet be so simply constructed as to be used with facility by children of all ages. It must likewise be so brief as to occupy but a small fraction of the time spent in the session of the school. Excerpt from The Sunday School Prayer Book The author deems it of sufiicient importance to add that it was designed to issue this edition, like the first, in the same handsome and rather costly form in which most of the works for children are now published. There is true philosophy in making books for children outwardly attractive, wrote the late Bishop Bowman when strongly recommending that this should not be forgotten even in the cheap edition. There is no doubt but that in being given a sensible importance, 8 book of this character would increase in spiritual influence. However, it has been thought best, in order to bring it within the reach of all, to diminish its size and cost by taking out the portions relating to the private Christian life of the child, and to readmit them in another issue to accompany this. For the same reason, although beauty of typography has been cared for, nearly all other ornament in printing and binding has been omitted. In its present form it goes before the Church for trial on its intrinsic merits alone, and may the blessing of God go with it.
