Survival Atlas Of Breast Pathology

This atlas presents the common and uncommon entities of breast pathology in the same way that we approach our clinical cases, that is, from low to high magnification.Each entity is introduced with pertinent macroscopic features followed by histologic images, ancillary studies, and cytopathology. Multiple images of each entity illustrate the range of variant patterns, with an emphasis on potential diagnostic pitfalls. Concise figure legends accompany the images and describe the histologic findings, clinicoradiographic correlates,differential diagnosis, and clinical significance.

This book presents the basic concepts for understanding and practicing breast pathology in routine practice. It explains how to tackle the diagnosis, emphasizing diagnostic clues for each entity as well as pitfalls and mimickers. Each chapter has concise, relevant text illustrated by numerous high-quality pictures highlighting the pearls and challenges in the diagnosis of breast lesions. Experts from around the world describe common and rarer conditions affecting the breast. Histology, immunohistochemistry, cytology, radiology and key morphologic criteria are covered. The book includes a chapter dedicated to breast normal histology, which is very important for understanding breast pathology, and a separate chapter for breast radiology, which is essential in understanding and diagnosing the breast lesions especially in a multidisciplinary team. Also, there is a chapter with the latest TNM staging system as well as the recently revised World Health Organization classification of breast tumors. Since in many breast units the cytology is still used to diagnose breast lesions there is a chapter dedicated to this technique. This book is aimed at trainees and practicing pathologists in surgical pathology, particularly those with an interest in breast pathology and those tackling the daily sign-out.

The aim of this atlas is to illustrate the wide range of histological appearances which can be seen in brea. st biopsies and mastectomy specimens. An attempt has been made to include photomicrographs showing the more usual appearances as well as some of the unusual patterns encountered in most common lesions of the breast. In addition some of the rarer forms of mammary pathology have been illustrated, sometimes extensively, where this was considered important in the differential diagnosis and where photomicrographs of good quality were available. Some of the low power photomicro graphs lack detail but have been retained as they illustrate Important microanatomical or architectural patterns. The majority of the photomicrographs are of histological preparations stained with haematoxylin and eosin, buta few special stains have been used to illustrate certain specific features. Only occasional photographs of gross specimens have been included. This is notto belittle the importance of gross appearances: indeed micro scopic examination of any tissue should always be complemented by careful naked-eye examination. A few mammographic pictures have also been included to illustrate characteristic patterns. There are no photo micrographs of cytological preparations as these were considered outside the scope of this book and excellent atlases of mammary cytology already exist. It is hoped thatthisatlaswill prove useful to surgical pathologists and others interested in the histological appearances of the breast. It is not intended as a comprehensive study of breast diseases, and details of clinical presentation and treatment have only been mentioned briefly.

A description of normal, developmental and physiological breast morphology will serve as introduction to the main content of this atlas. As immunohistochemistry is a key adjunctive tool in the workup of breast lesions as well as used in prognostic evaluation of breast cancers, appropriate examples are interspersed among the lesions where pertinent.
