Every year the Swiss Commission for Flood Protection (KOHS) of the Swiss Association for Water Management (SWV) organizes a symposium where professionals, officers of public administrations, and researchers exchange their experiences on special topics and key projects in river engineering and restoration. In 2014, this symposium was organized as a

Apley and Solomon’s Concise System of Orthopaedics and Trauma is firmly established as the leading introductory textbook of orthopaedic practice and the principles of fracture management. Praised in previous editions for its systematic approach, balanced content and easy-to-read style, the fourth edition has been brought fully up to date with more than 800 illustrations, many new to this edition, providing an invaluable pictorial account of this highly visual subject. Key features of the Fourth Edition: Reflects the changing pattern of musculoskeletal disease around the world Focuses on actual diseases and clinical signs, with additional coverage of anatomy where appropriate—ideal for the medical student and junior surgeon Provides helpful guidance on simple procedures without unnecessary operative detail Includes revised and expanded sections on developments in molecular biology and genetics—reflecting the growing clinical significance of these important areas Demonstrates new imaging technologies Retains popular features such as handy check points and text boxes—ideal for rapid assimilation during a clinical placement or exam revision This text remains the first choice for medical students, trainee surgeons and other health professionals seeking a concise introduction to this large and complex subject. It is a natural preface to the more detailed coverage offered by the parent book, Apley’s System of Orthopaedics and Trauma.

Today, new and unexpected challenges arise for Europe’s large array of existing dams, and fresh perspectives on the development of new projects for supporting Europe’s energy transition have emerged. In this context, the 12th ICOLD European Club Symposium has been held in September 2023, in Interlaken, Switzerland. The overarching Symposium theme was on the "Role of dams and reservoirs in a successful energy transition". The articles collected in this report book (consisting of a 250-page abstract book and a 1010-page full paper USB) cover the various themes developed during the symposium: - Dams and reservoirs for hydropower - Dams and reservoirs for climate change adaptation - Impact mitigation of dams and reservoirs - How to deal with ageing dams In conjunction with the Symposium, the 75th anniversary of the Swiss Committee on Dams offered an excellent opportunity to not only draw from the retrospective of Switzerland’s extensive history of dam development, but to also reveal perspectives on the new role of dams for a reliable and affordable energy transition. These aspects are illustrated by several articles covering the various activities, challenges, and concerns of the dam community.

This book features a collection of extended papers based on presentations given at the SimHydro 2019 conference, held in Sophia Antipolis in June 2019 with the support of French Hydrotechnic Society (SHF), focusing on “Which models for extreme situations and crisis management?” Hydraulics and related disciplines are frequently applied in extreme situations that need to be understood accurately before implementing actions and defining appropriate mitigation measures. However, in such situations currently used models may be partly irrelevant due to factors like the new physical phenomena involved, the scale of the processes, and the hypothesis included in the different numerical tools. The availability of computational resources and new capacities like GPU offers modellers the opportunity to explore various approaches to provide information for decision-makers. At the same time, the topic of crisis management has sparked interest from stakeholders who need to share a common understanding of a situation. Hydroinfomatics tools can provide essential information in crises; however, the design and integration of models in decision-support systems require further development and the engagement of various communities, such as first responders. In this context, methodologies, guidelines and standards are more and more in demand in order to ensure that the systems developed are efficient and sustainable. Exploring both the limitations and performance of current models, this book presents the latest developments based on new numerical schemes, high-performance computing, multiphysics and multiscale methods, as well as better integration of field-scale model data. As such, it will appeal to practitioners, stakeholders, researchers and engineers active in this field.
