One represented the interests of almost all the organized labor of the continent, while at the other council sat the controllers of its several largest indus tries.i A strike was in progress, but not a strike of the ordinary type. Thousands of men in all parts of the island, some even in New Zealand and Tasmania,2 had refused to work until justice, as they regarded it, should be done to a few marine officers involved in a dispute with their employ ers. Trade lines had disappeared. Sailors, sheep-shearers, miners, cooks, stewards, stokers and dockers, all stood side by side in their great struggle.
