"Intelligent and determined, Jeri holds her own among the ranks of impressive female detectives." Publishers Weekly A Jeri Howard mystery by the author of "Till the Old Men Die." In Alameda County, east of San Francisco, the all-American pastimes of adultery, divorce, and mindless violence prosper -- and Petty Officer First Class Sam Raynor, USN, fits right in. Private investigator Jeri Howard is working for Raynor's battered wife, who wants not only a divorce but half of everything Raynor's got. It turns out Raynor's hidden some big bucks from Uncle Sam. And that's not all he's hidden. Barely concealed behind his blond and muscled good looks is a vicious psychopath, whose wife-battering episodes are only the tip of an ugly iceberg. It seems Petty Officer Raynor's been getting away with murder . . . or close to it. And now that Jeri is on his trail, can murder be far behind?

Inspired by American studies of the impact of government programs on clients' political activity, Take a Number breaks new ground by investigating the lessons that people draw from their experiences with government bureaucracies, reaching very different conclusions about the effects of program participation in Canada. People's experiences with service providers matter. Far from being de-politicizing, negative experiences can be empowering, stimulating greater political interest and more political activity. In contrast to the findings of some American studies, there is no evidence that these encounters leave claimants in Canada with the sense that they are neither legitimate nor effective actors in the public sphere. Rather than discouraging participation in politics, being a recipient of means-tested benefits likewise seems to be politically mobilizing. Based on extensive survey data, Take a Number casts new light on the problem of non-take-up of social benefits. Elisabeth Gidengil reveals that those who are most likely to benefit are often unaware of government programs. The more demanding and intrusive the claiming process, the more likely claimants are to find it difficult to access the program. These experiences with government programs prove to have larger implications for users' confidence in institutions and their satisfaction with democracy. A wide-ranging study of the politicizing effects of social program participation, Take a Number introduces a compelling new dimension to our understanding of why some citizens are politically active while others remain quiescent.

Life is about living, and one thing we know for sure is that living involves waiting. We wait our turn by taking a number, or maybe one is assigned to us. We wait to see a doctor; our name is on a list. We wait to renew our license; we pulled a number. We wait for an available table; we’re handed a digital pager. We sometimes feel we spend most of our lives waiting for something or someone. And then there is waiting on God. In her book, Take a Number, Please: In Other Words ... Wait, author Gilda C. Hoychick shares stories about waiting. This collection of personal anecdotes and wisdom found in God’s Word will make you smile and reflect on times of waiting in your life. She also uses the Bible to teach important lessons relevant to living a Christian life. Take a Number, Please: In Other Words ... Wait, is a celebration of God and His infinite love and grace for us. You will find hope and encouragement through these pages of memoirs and times of waiting; most important, waiting on, trusting in, and putting your hope in the Lord. After all, He is the One who holds all the numbers.

When eight-year-old Irene is removed from her First Nations family to live in a residential school she is confused, frightened, and terribly homesick. She tries to remember who she is and where she came from, despite the efforts of the nuns who are in charge at the school and who tell her that she is not to use her own name but instead use the number they have assigned to her. When she goes home for summer holidays, Irene's parents decide never to send her and her brothers away again. But where will they hide? And what will happen when her parents disobey the law? Based on the life of co-author Jenny Kay Dupuis’ grandmother, I Am Not a Number is a hugely necessary book that brings a terrible part of Canada’s history to light in a way that children can learn from and relate to.
