This Norwegian-led, internationally relevant edited collection provides new insights into the transformation of teacher education programmes of the future by collating novel and cutting-edge innovations gleaned from ProTed, the Centre for Professional Learning in Teacher Education in Norway. Presenting research findings from a 10-year funded period of innovation and practice, the book discusses the implementation and dissemination of successful innovations to other teacher education institutions, both national and international. Led by direct experiences combined with empirical results, chapters explore a variety of methods that promote best practice within universities and higher education programmes. Written by members of the International Study Association on Teachers and Teaching, the papers in this volume were presented at an international teaching conference on the issues of theory and practice. Using these contributions from experienced researchers, most of whom are practising teachers, this single volume is international in scope and context, demonstrating differences and similarities between and within countries. Addresses a subject of common interest in developed countries - the apparently diminishing role of universities in the education of teachers. There is pressure to redesign teacher education, an on-going struggle between those who see the need to strengthen the knowledge base of teachers and those who favour learning on the job; there is a perceived need to define precisely what teachers need to know and be able to do and at the same time there is relaxation of entry standards for students entering the profession in an attempt to relieve the chronic shortage of teachers. This situation is prevalent in the USA, in the UK, Europe and Australia. Teacher education in the United States is changing to meet new policy demands for centering clinical practice and developing robust school-university partnerships to better prepare high-quality teachers for tomorrow’s schools. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOOLS (PDSs) have recently been cited in national reports as exemplars of high-quality school-university partnerships in the clinical preparation of teachers. According to the National Association for Professional Development Schools, PDSs have Nine Essentials that distinguish them from other school-university collaborations. But even with that guidance, working across the boundaries of schools and universities remains messy, complex, and, quite frankly, hard. That’s why, perhaps, there is such diversity in school-university partnerships. For the last thirty years, educators have been fascinated yet puzzled with how to build PDSs. Clinically Based Teacher Education in Action: Cases from PDSs addresses that perplexity by providing images of the possible in school-university collaboration. Each chapter closely examines one of the NAPDS Nine Essentials and then provides three cases from PDSs that target that particular essential. In this way, readers can see how different PDSs from across the globe are innovating to actualize that essential in PDS development. The editors provide commentary, addressing themes across the three cases. Each chapter ends with questions to start collaborative conversations and a field-based activity meant to propel your PDS work forward.

This report is organized around the following themes: (1) supply and demand for quality teachers (scholastic attainments of prospective teachers at the high school and college levels, demographic and social forces having an impact upon the recruitment of qualified students); (2) programs for teacher education (liberal education, subject specialization, professional education); (3) accountability for teacher education (state standards for teacher education programs, accreditation of teacher education programs); (4) resources for teacher education (school of education funding, allocation of resources for research and development, advanced degree programs); and (5) conditions necessary to support the highest quality of teaching (teacher salaries, advancement opportunities, work environments, status, autonomy). A broad analysis of each of the issues is provided and supported by empirical findings. A series of 16 recommendations is proposed to address the need for change and improvement.
