Teaching Philosophy In Early Modern Europe

This book examines how philosophy was taught in the early modern period in Europe. It breaks new ground in a number of ways. Firstly, it seeks to bring text-based scholars in the history of philosophy together with social and cultural historians to examine the interaction between tradition and innovation in the early modern classroom, the site where traditional views of the world were transmitted to the generation that was to give birth to modern philosophy and science. Secondly, it draws together scholars who are centered on ideas and words with other scholars who focus on the role of images in the classroom and the intellectual world in this central period of history. A team of leading scholars survey the development of philosophy in the period of extraordinary intellectual change from the mid-16th century to the early 18th century. They cover metaphysics and natural philosophy; the mind, the passions, and aesthetics; epistemology, logic, mathematics, and language; ethics and political philosophy; and religion.

Any attempt to understand the roles that textbooks played for early modern teachers and pupils must begin with the sobering realization that the field includes many books that the German word Lehrbuch and its English counterpart do not call to mind. The early modern classroom was shaken by the same knowledge explosion that took place in individual scholars' libraries and museums, and transformed by the same printers, patrons and vast cultural movements that altered the larger world it served. In the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries, the urban grammar school, the German Protestant Gymnasium and the Jesuit College, all of which did so much to form the elites of early modern Europe, took shape; the curricula of old and new universities fused humanistic with scholastic methods in radically novel ways. By doing so, they claimed a new status for both the overt and the tacit knowledge that made their work possible. This collected volume presents case studies by renowned experts, among them Ann Blair, Jill Kraye, Juergen Leonhardt, Barbara Mahlmann-Bauer and Nancy Siraisi.

In this groundbreaking collection of essays the history of philosophy appears in a fresh light, not as reason's progressive discovery of its universal conditions, but as a series of unreconciled disputes over the proper way to conduct oneself as a philosopher. By shifting focus from the philosopher as proxy for the universal subject of reason to the philosopher as a special persona arising from rival forms of self-cultivation, philosophy is approached in terms of the social office and intellectual deportment of the philosopher, as a personage with a definite moral physiognomy and institutional setting. While the transmission of Greek philosophy and science via the Muslim world to western Europe in the Middle Ages has been closely scrutinized, the fate of the Arabic philosophical and scientific legacy in later centuries has received less attention, a fault this volume aims to correct. The authors in this collection discuss in particular the radical ideas associated with Averroism that are attributed to the Aristotle commentator Ibn Rushd (1126-1198) and challenge key doctrines of the Abrahamic religions. This volume examines what happened to Averroes’s philosophy during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Did early modern thinkers really no longer pay any attention to the Commentator? Were there undercurrents of Averroism after the sixteenth century? How did Western authors in this period contextualise Averroes and Arabic philosophy within their own cultural heritage? How different was the Averroes they created as a philosopher in a European tradition from Ibn Rushd, the theologian, jurist and philosopher of the Islamic tradition?
