As a result of the pioneering efforts of Eigen, de Maeyer, Norrish and Porter, the kinetics of fast reactions in solution can now be studied using chemical relaxation methods, as well as many other fast reactions techniques. These methods have been applied successfully in many branches of the natural sciences. The simultaneous growth in the number of investiga tors and the diversity of their research interests has inevitably led to communication problems. The purpose of the NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled "New Applications of Chemical Relaxation Spectrometry and Other Fast Reaction Methods in Solution", was to create a forum so that research scientists working in different areas concerned with fast reactions could interact. This meeting was held at the Llandinam Building, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth from September 10th-20th, 1978. In addition to lectures on techniques and theory, two days of the NATO Advanced Study Institute, were spent discussing the current state of the art in this field. This two day meeting was also run under the auspices of the Chemical Society, Fast Reactions in Solution Group. The papers in this volume are the result of the contribu tions given in the Aberystwyth meeting. We have attempted to make this volume useful for the non-expert and a comprehensive introduction to theory, as well as the instrumentation used in the studies are discussed in detail.

The Present Edition Is A Revised And Enlarged Edition Of The Earlier Book (Chemical Kinetic Methods, Principles Of Relaxation Techniques And Applications). Four New Chapters, Dealing With The Fast Kinetic Methods, Viz. Flow Methods Pulse Radiolysis, Flash Photolysis And Fluoresence Quenching Method Have Been Added With A View To Bring More Such Methods In One Comprehensive Volume. As These Techniques Do Not Come Under The Category Of Relaxation Methods, The Title Of The Book Has Been Generalised As Chemical Kinetic Methods, Principles Of Fast Reaction Techniques And Applications . Some New Features Of This Book Are (I) The Inclusion Of Worked Out Examples And (Ii) Addition Of More Practice Problems Supplementing The Earlier Ones In All Chapters (Except Chapters I And Xi).It Is Hoped That Both These Features Will Be Welcomed By The Student Community Especially, Postgraduate Students Of Chemistry Who Wish To Have A Comprehensive Understanding Of This Area Of Kinetics. The Addition Of Many Numerical Problems (Worked Out Examples And Practice Problems) Might Also Provide Teachers Of This Subject (Fast Kinetic Methods) As Well As Those Teaching A General Course On Chemical Kinetics With A Wider Choice In Selection Of Problems In Their Academic Work. It Is Fervently Hoped That The Book Will Be Welcomed By The Chemistry Faculty Of Various Universities, I.I.Ts And Other Academic Institutions In The Country As Well As By Other Academicians Who Are Interested In The Area Of Chemical Kinetics.

Published a few years after the author's death, this volume is a sequel to his 1964 book, Fast Reactions in Solution; the material is entirely new, extending investigation beyond now well-established fast-reaction techniques to consider their contribution to understanding events on the molecular scale. After an introductory chapter on origins, methods, mechanisms, and rate constants, coverage includes the rates of diffusion-controlled reactions, mathematical theory of diffusion, flash photolysis techniques, fluorescence quenching, Marcus theory involving proton-transfer and group-transfer reactions in solutions, and electron-transfer reactions. The kinetics of reactions in soil and aquatic environments is a topic of extreme importance and interest. To properly understand the fate of applied fertilizers, pesticides, and organic pollutants with time, and to thus improve nutrient availability and the quality of our groundwater, one must study kinetics. This is the first compre Demonstrates different kinetic methodologies Shows how reactions on soil and soil constituents can be measured by utilizing different techniques Describes rates and mechanisms of interactions with pesticides and organic pollutants with soil Covers the kinetics of chemical weathering Discusses how to use mathematical modeling and computer simulation to model kinetic reactions

This new book provides the chemist with easy access to the most appropriate fast reaction techniques. 'Fast' chemical and biochemical reactions span twelve orders of magnitude on the time scale, from seconds down to picoseconds. This essential book describes and critically compares the wealth of techniques which have developed over the past three decades for measuring fast chemical reactions. Chemists and students will find the numerous problems and examples with solutions to be helpful in understanding the potentials of the different techniques applied to specific problems. Includes a diskette containing six computer programs for the mathematical analysis of rapid reaction systems.
