Chemical pesticides have contributed greatly to the increase of yields in agriculture by controlling pests and diseases and also towards checking the insect-borne diseases like malaria in the human health sector. However their sporadic use has been leading to significant erosion not only to public health but also to food quality resulting in an impact load on the environment and hence the development of pest resistance. The latter is reducing their efficacy and consequently one has to continually search for other chemical pesticides that may be more toxic and expensive. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) several hundred thousand tons of dangerous and useless pesticides are currently plaguing the countries around the globe. Even worse funds available for the cleanup of these obsolete pesticides are highly inadequate. On the other hand the rise in cost of pesticides has also economic consequences both to the individual farmer and the nation. Though overuse and misuse there is considerable waste, adding to the cost and contributing to the adverse environmental and health consequences. This not only affects the user of pesticides but also the ecosystem in general by entering the food chain and polluting the water table and surface water. Unprecedented rise of cancer chronic kidney disease, suppression of the immune system sterility among males and females, endocrine disorders, neurological and behavioural disorders, especially among children, have been attributed to chronic poisoning. Thus the formulation and applications of pesticides must be accurate in order to obtain the best possible must be accurate in order to obtain the best possible result, which will help in reducing the pesticide load in the environment. Besides the status report of the experts from 13 developing countries, this publication includes manuscripts and papers by eminent experts dealing with the technology of application of pesticides; usage of pesticides and occupational health; eco-friendly alternate strategies for the management of crop pests, diseases and weeds through biotechnological approaches; legislation governing the use of pesticides; technologies and alternative technologies; biological control etc. The publication also includes a set of recommendations made during the workshop. Pesticides, Insecticides, Fungicides and Herbicides are used in agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, commercial centres and houses for the pest control. India’s pesticide industry is the largest in Asia and the twelfth largest in the world and it has grown by 7.6 per cent during the last 20 years. During last 35 years, consumption of these products has increased manifold and industries are coming up throughout the world due to its increasing demand. Crops receiving the most intensive application of various pesticides were cotton for insecticides, corn for herbicides, and fruits and vegetables for fungicides. Examination of use trends of pesticides indicates that the volume in pounds of herbicides used on crops is increasing, whereas the quantities of insecticides and fungicides remain stable. The increased usage of pesticides, together with knowledge of some of their adverse effects, has alerted the public to the need for regulation. The insecticide usage is high in India because weeding is done manually in India and tropical climate of India which leads to greater incidences of insect infestations. Insecticides have a higher market share in India contrary to the global market where herbicides and fungicides have higher market shares. This book majorly deals with specification of pesticides, fungicides, permeability of liquid fumigants through polyethylene, insecticidal properties of deoxygenated and chlorinated shark liver oil, methods of determining chemical and physical properties, spectroscopic methods for determining the purity of products. This book also contains formulae, manufacturing process, infrared and ultraviolet spectra of seventy six pesticides and so on. The book contains formulae, processes of different types of pesticides, insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. This book will serve as a guide to research scientists, industrialists, policy makers and students.

Food security is one of the primary themes of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. In this regard, agricultural engineering is considered the backbone of agriculture, and agricultural mechanization is considered a helpful way to enhance crop yield and farmers’ profitability. Technology in Agriculture presents research in the field of agricultural engineering technologies and applications in agricultural equipment engineering, biosystem engineering, energy systems engineering, and computers in agriculture. It provides an overview of recent advancements in agricultural engineering and examines key aspects of emerging technologies and their applications. In addition, the book explores modern methodologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning for agricultural mechanization.

Although chemical pesticides safeguard crops and improve farm productivity, they are increasingly feared for their potentially dangerous residues and their effects on ecosystems. The Future Role of Pesticides explores the role of chemical pesticides in the decade ahead and identifies the most promising opportunities for increasing the benefits and reducing the risks of pesticide use. The committee recommends R&D, program, and policy initiatives for federal agriculture authorities and other stakeholders in the public and private sectors. This book presents clear overviews of key factors in chemical pesticide use, including: Advances in genetic engineering not only of pest-resistant crops but also of pests themselves. Problems in pesticide useâ€"concerns about the health of agricultural workers, the ability of pests to develop resistance, issues of public perception, and more. Impending shifts in agricultureâ€"globalization of the economy, biological "invasions" of organisms, rising sensitivity toward cross-border environmental issues, and other trends. With a model and working examples, this book offers guidance on how to assess various pest control strategies available to today's agriculturist.

Concern about health effects from exposure to pesticides in foods is growing as scientists learn more about the toxic properties of pesticides. The Delaney Clause, a provision of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, prohibits tolerances for any pesticide that causes cancer in test animals or in humans if the pesticide concentrates in processed food or feeds. This volume examines the impacts of the Delaney Clause on agricultural innovation and on the public's dietary exposure to potentially carcinogenic pesticide residues. Four regulatory scenarios are described to illustrate the effects of varying approaches to managing oncogenic pesticide residues in food.
