Excerpt from The Technology Quarterly and Proceedings of the Society of Arts, 1903, Vol. 16 It would be manifestly impracticable to do more than to give the very briefest digest of this mass Of information. I propose to give, cursorily, the present methods Of teaching engineering, taking the schools in fairly good geographical order, beginning in the north of Ireland, and going as far east on the Continent as the methods have come under my notice. In order to make comparisons with schools in the United States, I shall select two from among the many in our country for a brief review of methods there. In reference to this selection Of American schools I would not have it understood that it is made because I consider these schools superior to others, but because they are fair examples of the highest order of schools in our country. To endeavor to draw conclusions as to the best methods would require more courage, and possibly more assurance, than would be expected Of a layman, particularly since the doctors in engineering differ radically among themselves, not only in regard to details, but even regarding the general character and extent of the education. I cannot safely do more than give my recommendations as to the kind and character Of school we ought to have to harmonize with the principle upon which the university was based by its founder, which, I believe, was to enable our young people to Obtain in the United States the advanced education which they might need, or might desire, without being obliged to go across the ocean to find it. With this cardinal purpose in mind, the drift Of the remainder Of this report will be understood, appreciated, and assented to by all.
