Temporal Shadows

The Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA) conferences bring together researchers and practitioners from all over the world to exchange ideas, experiences and opinions in a friendly and stimulating environment. The papers are at once a record of what has been achieved and the first steps towards shaping the future of information systems. DEXA covers a broad field, and all aspects of database, knowledge base and related technologies and their applications are represented. Once again there were a good number of submissions: 241 papers were submitted and of these the programme committee selected 103 to be presented. DEXA’99 took place in Florence and was the tenth conference in the series, following events in Vienna, Berlin, Valencia, Prague, Athens, London, Zurich, Toulouse and Vienna. The decade has seen many developments in the areas covered by DEXA, developments in which DEXA has played its part. Important elements of games, movies, and other computer-generated content, shadows are crucial for enhancing realism and providing important visual cues. In recent years, there have been notable improvements in visual quality and speed, making high-quality realistic real-time shadows a reachable goal. Real-Time Shadows is a comprehensive guide to the theory and practice of real-time shadow techniques. It covers a large variety of different effects, including hard, soft, volumetric, and semi-transparent shadows. The book explains the basics as well as many advanced aspects related to the domain of shadow computation. It presents interactive solutions and practical details on shadow computation. The authors compare various algorithms for creating real-time shadows and illustrate how they are used in different situations. They explore the limitations and failure cases, advantages and disadvantages, and suitability of the algorithms in several applications. This book provides a comprehensive overview of modern methodology, diagnostic methods and techniques of HIV/AIDS imaging. It starts with a general review of HIV/AIDS imaging and evidence based medicine (EBM). In the following chapters, authors introduce 13 of most common types of AIDS/HIV-associated diseases separately. In this study of Yeats' poetry between 1902 and 1916, Greaves strongly reacts to the tendency in literary criticism to categorize Yeats' work as 'modernist', Instead, Greaves offer a different way of looking at the transition in Yeats' work in this period, by examining the poems in the context of Yeats' life. As a result, the figure of Yeats the poet is resurrected from the exhaustive category of 'modernism' and the complex connections between the figure of Yeats within the poems and its relationship with the Yeats who exists outside them is revealed.
