The Golden Age of Science Fiction MEGAPACKTM series focuses on unjustly forgotten science fiction writers. Horace B. Fyfe (1918-1997) was one. An engineer by trade, Fyfe also wrote a long string of popular science fiction and fantasy stories. He published extensively in genre magazines from his first appearance in "Astounding Science Fiction" (February 1940) until his last publication in "Analog" (January 1967). Sadly, Alzheimer's cut short his career, but his family stepped in to save his writing files, including more than 90 unpublished stories and an unpublished historical novel. Raymond Zinke Gallun (1911 - 1994) was among the earliest pulp fiction writers who specialized in science fiction, and he sold many stories to magazines in the 1930s under his own name and several pseudonyms (such as Dow Elstar, E.V. Raymond and William Callahan). His first novel, "People Minus X" (included here) was published in 1957, followed by his second, "The Planet Strappers," in 1961 (also included here). He was honored with the I-CON Lifetime Achievement Award in 1985 at I-CON IV; the award was later renamed The Raymond Z. Gallun Award. This volume assembles one novel and twenty-two short stories by American writer Richard M. Elam (1920-2013). Dick Elam was born in Richmond, Virginia, served for four years in the Army Air Force in World War II, and after the war became involved with the silk printing industry. On the side, he write articles, short stories, and books for young readers. He was one of the very few science fiction writers active in Young Adult fiction in the 1950s and early 1960s, and his books and short story collections served to introduce many young readers to the wonders of science and space. If Henry Hasse (1913–1977) is remembered today, it is probably as the co-author of Ray Bradbury's first published story, “Pendulum,” which appeared in November 1941 in Super Science Stories. He published only one novel, The Stars Will Wait, from a minor publisher in 1968. From the late 1930s to the early 1950s, however, he was a frequent and popular author in the pulp science fiction magazines, publishing more than 50 adventure stories such as the ones presented here. One, “He Who Shrank,” was anthologized in the seminal science fiction anthology, Adventures in Time and Space, edited by Raymond J. Healy and J. Francis McComas.
