If Henry Hasse (1913–1977) is remembered today, it is probably as the co-author of Ray Bradbury's first published story, “Pendulum,” which appeared in November 1941 in Super Science Stories. He published only one novel, The Stars Will Wait, from a minor publisher in 1968. From the late 1930s to the early 1950s, however, he was a frequent and popular author in the pulp science fiction magazines, publishing more than 50 adventure stories such as the ones presented here. One, “He Who Shrank,” was anthologized in the seminal science fiction anthology, Adventures in Time and Space, edited by Raymond J. Healy and J. Francis McComas. (If the title sounds familiar, you might also have read it in Isaac Asimov’s anthology, Before the Golden Age.) He published his last two stories—probably unsold tales from his pulpster years—in Whispers in the 1970s. Jerome Bixby was an American short story writer, editor and scriptwriter, best known for his work in science fiction. (He also wrote many westerns and used the pseudonyms Jay Lewis Bixby, D. B. Lewis, Harry Neal, Albert Russell, J. Russell, M. St. Vivant, Thornecliff Herrick and Alger Rome). He is most famous for the 1953 story "It's a Good Life" which was the basis for a 1961 episode of The Twilight Zone TV series and in Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983). He also wrote four episodes for the classic Star Trek TV series. Bixby's final work was the screenplay for the 2007 cult sci-fi film The Man From Earth. Nelson Slade Bond (1908-2006) had a remarkable career as a science fiction writer. He wrote extensively for books, radio, television and the stage, and especially the pulp magazines. Like Ray Bradbury, he did his journeyman work in the science fiction pulps before graduating to the higher-paying “slick” magazines like Bluebook.
