The Aegean Sea 2000

Annals of natural disasters have always caused common interest. Scientists and specialists of various domains, teachers, students, post-graduates, journalists .. and merely inquisitive can find useful and didactic information in such annals~ Sad experience of the natural disasters endured gives very important material for humanity. It allows us not only to understand better the phenomenon itself, but also to prepare ourselves for future cataclysms, which our "Mother-Nature" is so rich in. The book by Sergey Soloviev and a group of his collaborators represents a detailed description of tsunami waves and accompanying phenomena in the Mediterranean Sea over a period of approximately four thousand years. Sergey Soloviev, the founder and recognised leader of the Russian scientific school of tsunami researchers, was unable to see the publication of this book, passing away on March 9, 1994. However, his ample experience in investigation and systematisation of tsunami waves for the Pacific area [Soloviev and Go, 1974, 1975; Soloviev, Go and Kim, 1986] has been widely used in compiling this book. The Mediterranean coasts are the cradle of civilisation. Written accounts of past disasters in this region of the Earth are rather numerous and highly reliable. Therefore the results of the tsunami study in the Mediterranean Sea are of specific value both for the scientific community and for humanity at large.

The book contains contributions of scholars from Canada, Greece, Israel, Italy, and the United States. Section 1 consists of studies on historical and security issues, with contributions on the historical background of Greco-Turkish relations, British perspectives on these relations after World War II, the role of NATO, Greece's defense strategy, and the balance of power between Greece and Turkey. Section 2 addresses law of the sea and governance issues, and includes studies on Greece and the law of the sea, maritime boundaries in the Mediterranean, the Imia Rocks crisis, human security and governance, fisheries management, water resources management, joint development zones, and dispute settlement in the law of the sea.

The Aegean dispute between Greece and Turkey is a persistent problem between the two allied states. Difference of interpretation of the treaties has contributed in the prevalence of the argument. This dispute consists of five key issues. Greece only accepts one, namely the delimitation of the continental shelf. However, Turkey has introduced and has persisted on the other four, which are the delimitation of the territorial seas, the national airspace and FIR controls over the Aegean Sea, the demilitarization of the Eastern Aegean Islands and finally the disputed islands, islets and rocks which have presented the grey zones issue. All of these matters have persisted for so long, especially after the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 where the current status quo in the Aegean was introduced, due to economic, political and strategic reasons. The Aegean dispute does not only have consequences for Greece and Turkey; it also affects, negatively, NATO and the European Union. This is an ongoing problem, which if not solved it will produce future problems, not only for the two states, but also for NATO and the EU. A third party may be needed in order to assist in finding a just and permanent solution concerning this dispute, since Greece and Turkey seem incapable of solving this dispute by themselves.

Det Græske Øhav har i årenes løb givet anledning til mange problemer imellem Grækenland og Tyrkiet, som tillige har påvirket samarbejdet i NATO-regi. Problemet er hovedsageligt hvem der har suveræniteten over havet såvel som luftrummet over havet. De seneste forhandlinger vedrørende forholdet fandt sted i år 2000, hvor flere forhold blev drøftet og en løsning fundet, men ikke selve hovedproblemet. forfatteren diskuterer forholdet og de respektive sikkerhedsinteresser og analysere hvorvidt de seneste tilnærmelser vil kunne give et resultat.

This collection of essays commemorates the Thirtieth Anniversary of the 1972 Stockholm Declaration on the Human Environment. The opening presentation is by the distinguished former Foreign Minister of Sweden, Dr. Hans Blix, a primary author of the Stockholm Declaration. A second keynote abstract is by Professor Bjorn Lomborg, the renowned author of The Skeptical Environmentalist. The third keynote essay is by the United Nations Under Secretary-General of Legal Affairs, Hans Correl. The remainder of the volume includes contributions by six judges from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority, senior representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization, International Maritime Organization, World Bank, Swedish Foreign Ministry and United States Department of State along with 25 professors and environmental law experts from 15 countries. The collection provides a comprehensive, in-depth review of the historic achievement as well as current relevance of the 1972 Stockholm Declaration as a landmark achievement in international environmental law.
