Well known naturalist and environmentalist, John Muir made four trips to Alaska as far as Unalaska, Alaska and Barrow, Alaska. He first traveled to Alaska in 1879 and was the first Euro-American to explore Glacier Bay. Muir Glacier was later named after him. He returned for further explorations in Southeast Alaska in 1880, and in 1881 was with the party that landed on Wrangel Island on the USS Corwin and claimed that island for the United States. He documented this experience in journal entries and newspaper articles—later compiled and edited into his book The Cruise of the Corwin. Travels in Alaska and Stickeen are also Muir's books about his doings and adventures in Alaska. This is the first detailed account of the 5,000 black troops who were reluctantly sent north by the United States Army during World War II to help build the Alaska Highway and install the companion Canol pipeline. Theirs were the first black regiments deployed outside the lower 48 states during the war. The enlisted men, most of them from the South, faced racial discrimination from white officers, were barred from entering any towns for fear they would procreate a "mongrel" race with local women, and endured winter conditions they had never experienced before. Despite this, they won praise for their dedication and their work. Congress in 2005 said that the wartime service of the four regiments covered here contributed to the eventual desegregation of the Armed Forces.

This unique collection has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. John Muir made four trips to Alaska, as far as Unalaska and Barrow. Muir, Mr. Young and a group of Native American Guides first traveled to Alaska in 1879 and were the first Euro-Americans to explore Glacier Bay. Muir Glacier was later named after him. He traveled into British Columbia a third of the way up the Stikine River, likening its Grand Canyon to "a Yosemite that was a hundred miles long". Muir recorded over 300 glaciers along the river's course. He returned for further explorations in southeast Alaska in 1880 and in 1881 was with the party that landed on Wrangel Island on the USS Corwin and claimed that island for the United States. He documented this experience in journal entries and newspaper articles—later compiled and edited into his book The Cruise of the Corwin. In 1888 after seven years of managing the Strentzel fruit ranch in Alhambra Valley, California, his health began to suffer. He returned to the hills to recover, climbing Mount Rainier in Washington and writing Ascent of Mount Rainier. Joann Robertson's grandfather moved to the Yukon in 1897 to make his fortune. He did not succeed, but loved the North and decided to settle there. Leaving their eldest two children in London, his wife joined him in 1899. They had six more children born in various settlements. The life the family lived and the work they did -- telegraphy, dog team mail delivery, teaching and working in the gold-mining industry -- were typical of the Yukon during this era. From memories of her Yukon youth, family letters, photographs, unpublished works and news clippings, Joann describes the life of her and other families during this little-known period of Yukon time. Her narrative -- at one point describing the dismantling of a Model T Ford to smuggle it by canoe across a river in the dead of night -- echoes her love of this unique society.

Few construction projects of the twentieth century match the building of the Alaska Highway for drama, setting, and engineering challenge. In recognition of the 40th anniversary of this epidsode in Canadian-American cooperation, a symposium was held at Fort St. John, one of several communities that were, and still are, profoundly affected by the building of the road. The papers presented at this interdisciplinary gathering of international scholars of the Canadian and American births illustrate the significance of the highway in such diverse spheres as Canadian-American relations, British Columbia politics, American military history, and the evolution of the northern society.
