Halloween is approaching…and the game is afoot. Mysterious happenings are plaguing the Richardson family. A chilling painting of a dreadful place only rumoured to exist, missing jewels, and an unexpected, bloody attack put young Holmes and Watson on the case. Recently settled in Toronto to attend university, Sherlock Holmes becomes acquainted with Janah Watson at Baker House, a Victorian-era home that has been converted into a student residence. A friendship seems unlikely—Holmes is too eccentric and Watson has no patience for eccentricity. But when the duo is invited by Mrs. Hudson (Baker House’s housekeeper) to investigate the odd things that are happening to the daughter of her former employer, Holmes and Watson must put aside their differences and solve a phantasmic case.

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes was initially published in 1894 after each of the individual stories contained within had appeared separately in The Strand magazine. This collection was the follow-up to The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes which introduced the detective and his loyal companion Dr. John Watson. The Memoirs are generally considered the superior to the collection which introduced the detective, but not as strong as the stories he solved in the next collection following his resurrection. Yes, indeed, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes draws to a close with Dr. John Watson disconsolate in his conviction that Holmes and his nemesis Prof. Moriarty fell to their deaths after a struggle atop Reichenbach Falls. Before Sherlock has that fateful meeting which may or not have played out as Watson imagines, he embarks upon a series of adventures that start off with a bang with his clever solving of the disappearance of a missing racehorse thanks to what the dog infamously did not do in the night. After that is a memorable tale of sibling rivalry and revenge gone wrong that kicks off with the arrival of one of the most gruesome clues in any Holmes mystery: two severed ears inside a box delivered to a home.

Having foiled sabotage of Project: Tesseract by an unknown spy ring, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Skye Chadwick face the next challenge. How do they find the members of this diabolical spy ring when they do not even know what the ring is trying to accomplish? And how can they do it when Skye is recovering from no less than two nigh-fatal wounds? Further complicating matters is their relationship. For the ups and downs between Holmes and Chadwick are due to something more than the occasional clash of demanding, eccentric personalities. Chadwick acknowledges to herself that she has fallen in love with Holmes. Knowing he eschews matters of the heart, however, she struggles to hide it, in order to maintain the friendship they do have, preferring said friendship to total alienation. Holmes also feels attraction - but fights it tooth and nail, refusing to admit to the fact, even to himself. After all, it is not merely Skye's work the spies may be after - but her life as well. Having already lost Watson to the vagaries of spacetime, could he endure losing another companion? Can they work out the intricacies of their relationship? Can they determine the reason the spy ring is after the tesseract? And - most importantly - can they stop it?

Siblings Robert and Laura McIntyre have fallen on hard times following the death of their mother and their father’s subsequent descent into alcoholism, which is bankrupting the family. Their fortunes appear to be on the up though following the arrival of a mysterious, eccentric, and wealthy new neighbour called Raffles Haw. An insightful, moralistic tale about the corrupting nature of extreme wealth from renowned Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a British author, best known as the creator of the world-famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Born in Edinburgh, he was educated in England and Austria before studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh. It was during his time at university that Doyle began writing short stories, submitting them to magazines and journals. His first Sherlock Holmes novel, ‘A Study in Scarlet’ was written in just three weeks and published in 1887 to favourable reviews, and more Sherlock adventures followed. By 1893, Doyle was growing tired of Sherlock and attempted to kill him off in the story ‘The Final Problem’, but public outcry caused him to resurrect the famous detective. He featured in a total of 56 short stories and four novels along with his trusty sidekick Dr Watson and made Doyle one of the best-paid authors of the time. The stories have been adapted multiple times; most recently in the successful BBC series ‘Sherlock’ starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Later literary works included the Professor Challenger series which began with ‘The Lost World’, in which Challenger sets out to find evidence of prehistoric life. The book inspired numerous adaptations, including the films ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘The Lost World’. In later life Doyle became captivated by the world of spiritualism and the occult and published non-fiction works about his beliefs including ‘The Coming of the Fairies’. Arthur Conan Doyle died at home in 1930.
