The Art of Investigation Revisited: Practical Tips from the Experts examines the qual- ities required to be a professional, thorough, and effective investigator and is a follow up to the authors’ highly touted book, The Art of Investigation (2019). This book features a wholly new line-up of investigators, experienced professionals in the field, who delve into the "soft skills" that make an investigator effective. Each chapter examines a specific quality required to be a professional, thorough, and—most importantly—successful in this challenging discipline. The editors, and contributing authors, are all top in their field and bring a wealth of real-world knowledge and experience to the subject. While several publications exist on the procedures and steps of an investigation, few books cover the creative and intuitive skills required. Such traits are necessary to continually question in the face of investigative roadblocks, unique qualities endemic to an inquisitive mind that can be trained to improve an investigator’s professional skill set. Each chapter discusses the applicability of the traits and requirements to the contributor’s own work and experience as an investigator. In doing so, the contributors will provide valuable stories from their personal experience, which demonstrates their use or a given trait and its importance in the course of their investigative work and career. The case examples included throughout are engaging and, as is often the case, surprising. An investigator must keep an open mind above all else and this book seeks to "lift the veil" on the inner workings of an investigation and the thought pro- cess and inner monologue of an investigator as part of that process. The book is a welcome addition to any investigator’s toolkit and is also of interest to students in criminal justice, security and Homeland Security programs, security consultants, corporate and private security professionals, and the legal community.

The Art of Investigation examines the qualities required to be a professional, thorough, and effective investigator. As the title suggests, it delves into more than the steps and procedures involved in managing an investigation, it also covers the "soft skills" necessary to effectively direct investigations and intuit along the way. The editors and contributing authors are the best in their field, and bring a wealth of real-world knowledge and experience to the subject. There are several publications available on the nuts-and-bolts of the process and stages of an investigation. That ground has been covered. However, little has been published on the investigative skills required, the traits necessary, and the qualities endemic to an inquisitive mind that can be cultivated to improve an investigator’s professional skill-set. Each chapter discusses the applicability of the traits to the contributor’s own work and experience as an investigator. In doing so, the contributors provide a story—or set of stories—from their personal experience, which demonstrates a given trait and its importance in the course of their investigative work and career. This will be first-hand experience that will serve to help any investigative professional in the course of their work. The case examples included throughout are sometimes surprising, but always engaging and insightful. An investigator must keep an open mind above all else, and this book will "lift the veil" on the inner workings of an investigation, in addition to the thought processes and inner monologues of an investigator as part of that process. Key Features • Chapters highlight the qualities and traits—the "soft skills"—that are required, and which can be improved over time, to be a thorough investigator. • A veritable "Who’s Who" of renowned investigative experts lend their personal expertise and experience to this how-to manual for investigators. • A unique approach is applied and provides self-help advice for both new and experienced investigative and security professionals. • The book focuses on the learned, acquired, and intuitive skills of investigation—a nuanced but essential aspect of the investigative skill-set. The Art of Investigation will be a welcome addition to any investigator’s toolkit and will also be of interest to students in criminal justice, security, and Homeland Security programs, security consultants, corporate and private security professionals, and the legal community.

In the world of law enforcement art and antiquity crime has in the past usually assumed a place of low interest and priority. That situation has now slowly begun to change on both the local and international level as criminals, encouraged in part by the record sums now being paid for art treasures, are now seeking to exploit the art market more systematically by means of theft, fraud and looting. In this collection academics and practitioners from Australasia, Europe and North America combine to examine the challenges presented to the criminal justice system by these developments. Best practice methods of detecting, investigating, prosecuting and preventing such crimes are explored. This book will be of interest and use to academics and practitioners alike in the areas of law, crime and justice.

The goal of this unique manual is to arm criminal investigators with tools and weapons that are suitable and effective against art theft and forgery. The author, with over 25 years' experience in the art theft investigation field, presents comprehensive techniques, tips, and ideas to help dimish the level of frustration experienced by criminal investigators required to handle the growing number and magnitude of art crimes. The structure of the manual is simple and direct. The first part guides the reader in the use of the text and introduces the art world environment. The second part discusses the investigator's interaction with the victim, including interviewing, crime scene investigation, and identifying and developing suspects. Part three deals with offenders and covers such topics as art theft methods, forgery techniques, methods of distribution, and investigative countermeasures. The final section presents a comprehensive review of solutions and recoveries, including chapters on legal weapons, insurance and rewards, the use of experts, universal and variable contact group classifications, object bulletins, art criminal photo albums, informant development, undercover methods, unidentified victims, and recovery and seizure of stolen or fake art. In addition, the book is complemented by an extensive glossary and bibliographic resources. This exceptionally unique manual is intended to function at an intensely practical level and is intended for both study and immediate reference.

Oxidative stress is an underlying factor in health and disease. Reactive oxygen species are produced as a result of normal cellular metabolism. The subsequent altered redox state between the formation and the neutralization of pro-oxidants results in their increased levels and therefore leads to cellular damage. Different research disciplines have increased our knowledge of the importance of this cell redox status and the recognition of oxidative stress as a process with implications for many pathophysiological states. Genetic and environmental factors, nutrition and lifestyle may indicate a pro-oxidative and pro-inflammatory state, linked to alterations in cellular structure and function. Oxidative stress emerges as a common, unifying factor in several conditions including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. This eBook aims to provide novel data regarding the role played by oxidative stress and inflammation in the development of chronic diseases and the different classes of therapeutics from the bench to the clinic, stressing the awareness of these concepts for the treatment of disease. In addition, articles addressing an overview of the role of oxidative stress in vascular diseases reviewing some current concepts indicating that oxidative stress and inflammation are key mechanisms linking vascular diseases and current state-of-the-art approaches to monitor, prevent and inhibit oxidative stress will be highlighted. There is a close relation between oxidative stress, inflammation and cardiovascular diseases. Despite the great amount of investigation carried out in the field, there are still uncertainties about the mechanisms by which free radicals can modify tissues such as perivascular adipose tissue that ultimately will reflect on vascular function. This eBook will focus on articles that can explore and identify these mechanisms. Concurrent with this understanding of oxidative stress milieu, it is necessary to recognize the need for new pharmacological tools effective in restoring oxidative balance. The abundance of new information and the paradigm shift in our understanding of how antioxidants and other redox-active drugs work in a wide variety of vascular diseases will be specifically highlighted. This eBook will provide a comprehensive, up-to-date source of information on the design and mechanistic, pharmacological, and medicinal aspects of redox-active therapeutics. Finally, a unique feature of the eBook is to provide a way to foster an enthralling discussion revisiting old paradigms and finding new solutions for the treatment of vascular diseases. The topic will include original research articles, hypotheses, perspectives and (mini)reviews from experts in the field. The next decade shows promise for the translation of this body of knowledge to novel human therapeutics and this eBook will enable to increment our knowledge in this field.

The understanding of communication refers to canonical schemes from technologies to decisions on where, how, and why the semic act gains or is at risk; to hypotheses and limits; and to normal and unconventional exchanges of senses, despite the confrontations between codes, coding, and decoding. In this book, communication is defined as concept, skill, potential, behavior, mechanism, category of exchange, phenomenon, tool, and variable. This sophisticated view differs from previous studies and assumes the multiple systems of systems and meanings generated by various fieldworks that require/reclaim their primacy over communication. Basic Communication and Assessment Prerequisites for the New Normal of Education discusses the rivalry paradigms, ambiguities, new meanings, and mechanisms of the crossroad between communication and assessment. This book makes an inventory of developments in the area as well as analyzes new edumetrics and psychometrics and inserts new best practices. This involves creating new conversational networks of global best practices and metaparadigms in order to solve current disparities and unsolved problems from the fieldwork. Covering topics such as chronic conditions, online educational environments, and self-assessment competencies, this text is ideal for teachers, parents, students, trainers, decision makers, researchers, and academicians.
