Excerpt from The Autobiography of Judas Iscariot We came to Joppa on the morning of a blue and gold day; but, entering the Moonpool in early evening, found ourselves shrouded by mist and overhung by tenebrous cloud. On a bale of sesame, I sat and watched the sights of deck and shore. Low, rock-bound coast, the surf white and high against it; broken and battered walls; at the extremity of a tiny cape, the white town; sandhills; and beyond, groves of blossoming fruit, white, and pink, and yellow. The quay was clamorous and crowded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from And Judas Iscariot: With Other Revival Sermons The sermqns contained in this volume are published in response to nu merous requests that they might be put into per manent form. Ti The author of these sermans needs no introduction to the Christian readers of America. His fame as an author, preacher and evangelist is more than national. As Director of the evangelistic work carried on by the General Assembly's Committee of the Presbyterian Church, he has achieved distinction as a preacher of the Gospel. Under his direction simul taneous evangelistic campaigns have been held in many of the leading cities of the land, and the Christian Church and the world have had an experience of a new aggressive and emphatic evangelism, that has stirred the Church, revived Christian service and been the means under God of turning thousands to a life of allegiance to J esus Christ. Excerpt from Judas Iscariot: A Miracle Play in Two Acts, With Other Poems It had frequently occurred to me that the story of Judas Iscariot contained elements of a tragedy of a more terrible kind than could be developed from any other event in history; but for the first idea of attempting it, I am indebted to an Ordination Sermon delivered by his Grace the Archbishop of Dublin. It was printed at the earnest request of the Priests and Deacons then ordained. "In contemplating," says the Archbishop, "the case of Judas Iscariot, you should first remark that there is no reason for concluding, as unreflecting readers often do, that he was influenced solely by the paltry bribe of thirty pieces of silver (probably equal, in silver, to about sixty shillings; and in value to perhaps about twice that sum in the present day) to betray his Master, and to betray Him designedly to death. Excerpt from Judas Iscariot: Or Kings and Traitors Not so Benedict Arnold. The good which he had done was smothered by the venomous breath of treachery; and the fair name which he had won for himself was by his own hand exchanged for a traitor's pottage. It has been truly said that Benedict Arnold was as brave a man as ever lived. It was but the turn of a die that made him Arnold the traitor instead of Arnold the patriot. But it was his own hand that turned that die. Benedict Arnold saw the ladder of fame stoop to take him upon its shoulders; he saw the gilded chariot of honor pause at his threshold to invite him to its purple seat; and he gazed upon the laurel wreath of Victory which a new nation was about to place upon his brow. But the ladder of fame he spurned; and the chariot of honor he challenged; and the laurel wreath of Victory he brushed aside, to see it afterwards ex changed for a crown of guilt.
