The life of a saint in their own words. This is a translated transcript of Saint Ignatius' own description of his life and spiritual battles. Ignatius was raised by the wife of a blacksmith, eventually becoming a knight. After being injured in battle he was inspired by stories of saints to dedicate himself to his religion and eventually became an influential religious figure. He is famous for his Spiritual Exercises, which aim to bring the practitioner closer to the divine through four "weeks" of work, but perhaps more so for founding the Jesuit order. These are not the topics of the autobiography however, as ever humble Ignatius is more concerned with examining his own spiritual (rather than material) battles and conversion. This account of the life of St. Ignatius, dictated by himself, is considered by the Bollandists the most valuable record of the great Founder of the Society of Jesus. The editors of the Stimmen Aus Maria Laach, the German review, as well as those of the English magazine, The Month, tell us that it, more than any other work, gives an insight into the spiritual life of St. Ignatius. Few works in ascetical literature, except the writings of St. Teresa and St. Augustine, impart such a knowledge of the soul. To understand fully the Spiritual Exercises, we should know something of the man who wrote them. In this life of St. Ignatius, told in his own words, we acquire an intimate knowledge of the author of the Exercises. We discern the Saint's natural disposition, which was the foundation of his spiritual character. We learn of his conversion, his trials, the obstacles in his way, the heroism with which he accomplished his great mission. This autobiography of St. Ignatius is the groundwork of all the great lives of him that have been written. Bartoli draws from it, Genelli develops it, the recent magnificent works of Father Clair, S.J., and of Stewart Rose are amplifications of this simple story of the life of St. Ignatius. The Saint in his narrative always refers to himself in the third person, and this mode of speech has here been retained. Many persons who have neither the time, nor, perhaps, the inclination, to read larger works, will read, we trust, with pleasure and profit this autobiography. Ignatius, as he lay wounded in his brother's house, read the lives of the saints to while away the time. Touched by grace, he cried, "What St. Francis and St. Dominic have done, that, by God's grace, I will do." May this little book, in like manner, inspire its readers with the desire of imitating St. Ignatius. THE EDITOR. Easter, 1900. College of St. Francis Xavier, New York.

Excerpt from The Life of St. Ignatius Loyola The grey morning was breaking mistily over the little town of Pamplona in Navarre. To many of those within the citadel it seemed as if the greyness of the morning had found its way into their very hearts, so unpromising was the outlook that lay before them. The little garrison had been weakened by the retreat of many of the Spanish officers their fortifications were incomplete; ammunition was scarce; and encamped at their very gates lay the French army. The attack might begin at any moment, and unless the expected reinforcements arrived, nothing could save the citadel.' We do not think of Saint Francis as a writer, but as a stigmatic. However, he wrote the Rule of the First, Second and Third Orders he founded. He also wrote an explanation of the Our Father and many other useful works, which are contained in this collection. Franciscans and non-Franciscans alike will profit from the Seraphic Francis' sage advice.St. Alphonsus writes: "a single bad book will be sufficient to cause the destruction of a monastery." Pope Pius XII wrote in 1947 at the beatification of Blessed Maria Goretti: "There rises to Our lips the cry of the Saviour: 'Woe to the world because of scandals!' (Matthew 18:7). Woe to those who consciously and deliberately spread corruption-in novels, newspapers, magazines, theaters, films, in a world of immodesty!" We at St. Pius X Press are calling for a crusade of good books. We want to restore 1,000 old Catholic books to the market. We ask for your assistance and prayers. This book is a photographic reprint of the original The original has been inspected and many imperfections in the existing copy have been corrected. At Saint Pius X Press our goal is to remain faithful to the original in both photographic reproductions and in textual reproductions that are reprinted. Photographic reproductions are given a page by page inspection, whereas textual reproductions are proofread to correct any errors in reproduction.

Excerpt from Saint Ignatius of Loyola Exercises, the Constitutions, and especially the Letters. When I have had recourse to other sources I have been careful to acknowledge them. This book has been written with perfect freedom. If it is not found to contain many concessions to inveterate suspicion and bias it is because nothing is more calculated to destroy a host of prejudices than prolonged intercourse with a man above the common. There are some legends which belittle human nature, just as there are others which hide it from view under improbable marvels. It is an understood thing that the aim of this Series is to refute those contradictions of exact truth which have been propagated by both classes.
