Each variety of Belgian Sheepdog has a different coat coloration and hair texture. As a whole the Belgian Sheepdog is known to be highly intelligent, alert, sensitive, affectionate and loyal. The Belgian Tervuren, commonly known simply as the 'Tervuren, ' is a breed working dog from Belgium. The breed is named after a small village in Belgium. Traditionally, the Belgian Tervuren is a variant of the Belgian Sheepdog. However in 1959 the American Kennel Club recognized the Belgian Tervuren as being a breed in its own right. The Belgian Tervuren is a medium-sized, athletic and muscular herding type of dog. It has a thick double coat that normally comes in a mahogany coloration with hints of black speckled throughout its coat. The breed also has a black mask that covers its muzzle which gives it a similar appearance to the German Shepherd. As a whole the Belgian Tervuren is a highly energetic and intelligent dog. They need constant attention and exercise to keep them occupied. Like most working dogs, the breed is known to develop destructive habits if they are not exercised properly. The Coton de Tulear is a small breed of dog that originates from Madagascar, as is actually the island's nation dog. The breed is named after the city of Tuléar, which is located in Madagascar, and for its cotton-like coat texture. The breed is believed to be a descendant of the Tenerife dog that has been mated with a breed native to Madagascar during the 16th century. The Coton de Tulear is a member of the Bichon typing and is still closely related to the Bichon Tenerife and the Tenerife Terrier. The Coton de Tulear has always been a companion dog and has never been feral. Unlike most other breeds of dog developed in Madagascar, the Coton de Tulear has never been used to hunt wild boar or alligators, as its size and strength prove. The Coton de Tulear also has a nonexistent prey drive which further suggests that the breed has always been a companion dog. The breed's cotton-like coat is believed to be a result of a single gene mutation. The Coton de Tulear has a medium-to-long coat that is considered to be hair rather than fur. Despite having long hair the breed is considered to be hypoallergenic as it barely ever sheds once it is full grown - however, like the Poodle and Havanese, the Coton de Tulear will shed its puppy coat. The breed's coat comes in three standardize colorations: white, black and white, and tricolor (which is a mixture of black, white and tan). As a whole the Coton de Tulear is known to be a highly affectionate, intelligent and playful breed. They fit perfectly well into a family household environment. Despite their small size, it is recommended to keep a Coton de Tulear in a house, rather than an apartment, as they are very vocal and will grunt, bark and whine often while playing. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. The Bloodhound, also commonly known as the 'Sleuth Hound, ' is a large breed of scent hound that was originally developed to be able to hunt deer and wild boar. During the Middle Ages the Bloodhound was also used to track people. The breed has an incredible sense of smell that allows it to discern specific human scents across great distances. The mixture of the breeds innate hunting instinct and sense of smell has lead the Bloodhound to be used by modern day police and law enforcement across the world. The breed primarily is used to track escaped prisoners, lost children, missing people and lost pets. However due to the breeds tireless tracking, when following a scent, they can be difficult to obedience train. The Bloodhound has an affectionate and gentle temperament which has lead the breed to become an ever increasingly popular household pet. The breed has a loose and thin coat that sheds seasonally. The Bloodhound's coat comes in three common colorations: black and tan, liver and tan, and red.
