But this is only a first impression. Closer inspection shows that what the Bible contains of history is historic framework, that serves to hold together other kinds of literature, such as story, song, discourse, drama, philosophy, epistles. These other kinds of literature, sometimes called the higher literary forms, contain the real message of Scripture. With this consideration goes another. What I am calling the historic framework must, in the nature of things, be late in its date. Only at the close of the period of ancient Israel, only at the close of the era of the primitive Church, could be made the disposition of their books which has come down to us.
