Excerpt from The Book of Daniel and the Minor Prophets The story, as well as in some ways the character, of Daniel bears a striking resemblance to that of Joseph. Taken as a captive, when a youth, into the centre of a mighty alien civilisa tion, living in the midst of subtle temptations, each of them passed, in young manhood, to the rank of prime minister of a great empire, and by the same means, the reading of dreams troubling the king, where in one case the very dream itself was forgotten. Excerpt from Daniel and the Minor Prophets The present volume of the Modem Reader's Bible has a special subject which involves some differences in the arrangement of the book. It contains not an author but a corpus prophetarum: the 'Minor Prophets, ' with the addition of Daniel. Such an introduction as I have attempted to previous volumes seems unsuitable in this case; I have thought it more convenient to place at the commencement of the notes to each author what I have to offer in the way of general remarks. Considerations of space have further obliged me to reduce to a minimum the explanation of particular passages; in place of this I have usually given an analysis of each discourse or other division of prophecy. With this must be remembered, what is the principle of the whole series, that the arrangement of the text is itself of the nature of a commentary. Another point of arrangement should be explained here. All that in the Bible follows the eighth chapter of Zechariak will be found in the present volume under the heading 'Anonymous.' Every reader will be aware that the authorship of the latter part of Zechariah is disputed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Expositions of Holy Scripture: Ezekiel, Daniel, and the Minor Prophets All these false faiths got on very well together. Their worshippers had no quarrel with each other. Poly theism, by its very nature and the necessity of its being, is tolerant. All its rabble of gods have a mutual understanding, and are banded together against the only One that says, 'thou shalt have none other gods beside Me.' Excerpt from The Prophet Daniel: A Key to the Visions and Prophecies of the Book of Daniel The Book of Daniel with its great prophecies, both fulfilled and unfulfilled, is one of the most interesting portions of God's Holy Word. Before we follow this blessed book in a series of studies a few general remarks on Prophecy and its importance may be in order. Prophecy is history prewritten. The center of all Prophecy and the goal as well is the Lord Jesus Christ. His sufferings and His Glory, His two Comings, as Man of Sorrows to suffer and to die, as King of Glory to reign were beheld and written in advance by the holy men of God through the power of God's Spirit. The entire history of the chosen people Israel is written in the prophetic Word. All their sufferings and wanderings, what has befallen them in the past; their present lot, scattered among all the nations of the earth; what is yet to come upon them in tribulation and judgment, as well as blessing and peace, are found prewritten in the Bible.
