The Bronte sisters have received an enormous amount of critical attention, given their short lives and relatively slender literary production. As a group and individually the Brontes' works resist being swept away by any one critical approach. They defied conventional ideas of the novel genre and have always made it difficult for critics to categorize them. The aim of these volumes is to emphasize both the diversity and difficulty of critical approaches to the works.

Excerpt from Novels of the Sisters Bronte "Villette" was first published in 1853 - on January 28th. In a letter to Miss Wooler, dated January 27 th, 1858, Charlotte Bronte wrote: "Villette is to be published to-morrow. Its appearance has been purposely delayed hitherto, to avoid discourteous clashing with Mrs. Gaskell's new work." The story was received, as its writer's friend and biographer tells us, "with one burst of acclamation"; but the laudatory notices only served to make the author's heart "swell with thankfulness to Him who takes note both of suffering, and work, and motives." But it seemed fated that each of her books should bring with it some jar in friendship or some disappointment in expectation. "Jane Eyre was the centre of a very vortex of discussion; "Shirley" touched for its writer the weakness in Greorge Henry Lewes's character; and now "Villette" brought forth a review in the Daily News which disappointed her in Harriet Martineau. A beautifully imagined tale of the Brontë sisters and the writing of Jane Eyre. Sheila Kohler's memoir Once We Were Sisters is now available. The year is 1846. In a cold parsonage on the gloomy Yorkshire moors, a family seems cursed with disaster. A mother and two children dead. A father sick, without fortune, and hardened by the loss of his two most beloved family members. A son destroyed by alcohol and opiates. And three strong, intelligent young women, reduced to poverty and spinsterhood, with nothing to save them from their fate. Nothing, that is, except their remarkable literary talent. So unfolds the story of the Brontë sisters. At its center are Charlotte and the writing of Jane Eyre. Delicately unraveling the connections between one of fiction's most indelible heroines and the remarkable woman who created her, Sheila Kohler's Becoming Jane Eyre will appeal to fans of historical fiction and, of course, the millions of readers who adore Jane Eyre, as well as biographies about the Brontës like Claire Harman’s Charlotte Brontë: A Fiery Heart.

First published in 1968, this reissue of Dr. Craik’s critical appreciation of the completed novels of Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë is seminal for the way in which it shifts emphasis away from the Brontë family biography towards a detailed critical analysis of the novels themselves. Separate chapters are given to each of the seven novels. The author’s aims and techniques in each are assessed and Dr. Craik shows what light the books throw on each other, how they are related to the novels of the Brontë’s predecessors, and how the Brontë novels compare with their great contemporaries in the nineteenth century novel.
