Excerpt from The Catholic Pioneers of America This little volume is the imperfect fulfilment of a long-cherished design. It trenches on no other work. It merely moves into an unoccupied place - a place of its own. We speak a language in which, I regret to say, it has been the fashion for centuries to give as little credit as possible to Catholics and the Catholic Religion. I have often felt the want of a cheap, handy work on the present subject. Among people, otherwise well informed, there is, beyond all doubt, a great deal of disgraceful ignorance as to what Catholics have achieved in the New World. Let me illustrate. On one occasion, an American lady - who had just given the finishing touches to her education at Paris - expressed astonishment on my saying that Christopher Columbus was a Catholic, and that he found in his religion the chief motive that led him to double the size of the world's map. It seemed to sound stranger than if I had asserted that the illustrious Admiral was a Mormon, a Mahometan, or even the great-grandson of Jack the Giant-killer. Some years ago, I was amused to hear an educated gentleman state that Champlain was a Huguenot, because his name was Samuel; and he assured me that he had this ridiculous piece of information from the principal of a school in Canada. Excerpt from A Popular History of the Catholic Church in the United States IT is seldom, indeed, that the American Catholic author of a strictly Catholic book, has the gratification of adding a few words to the fourth edition of his fist book within a few months after its first issue. Yet, scarcely six months have passed since the first copy of the present volume was given to the public. The earliest edition was so quickly disposed of, that I had but little time to make a hasty re vision, when another was called for. Soon a third edition was demanded, and, now, a fourth. I feel that I am deeply indebted to the kindness and generous appreciation of our Catholic public. To express fully my warm gratitude, I am at a loss for fitting terms. Were my volume a novel, or a romance, I would not be so astonished at its success; but it is a book of dates, facts, and figures, a book in which imagination had little room for play, a book, in fine, standing on the solid ground of truth. But, after all, perhaps, truth is stranger than fiction. Nor are my thanks less due to the American, Canadian, and British press, for the friendly expressions of welcome, the manly, courteous reception accorded to my first literary venture in the book-world. But I thank, above all, those learned and venerable Rulers of the Church whose valued, weighty, and beauti ful words of encouragement, I'can never forget. Excerpt from Documents of American Catholic History A word should be said about the method used in collecting and editing the documents. First, with the exception of those from the colonial period, the arrangement is chronological. Since the Catholic missions of the three European powers that sent out colonies from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries are usually treated as separate units, it seemed best to break the chronology in this earlier section and list the entries under the headings of Spain, France, and England. It was also thought preferable to put two or more items on a single person together under the date of the first document rather than to separate them. Most of the material was naturally taken from sources in English, but for that written in foreign languages standard translations were used whenever they were available. In a few cases, however, translations were made either by the editor himself or were supplied to him through the kindness of friends. In the main the documents are printed just as they appear in the original source, although in some instances minor changes have been made either to improve the translations from foreign sources or to insert punctuation in certain English documents in order to clarify the meaning. For each item a single source has been cited in the introductory note, although in some instances the same document may be found in several collections. The translations of papal bulls and encyclicals generally give the student a reference to the official collections of the Holy See where the original may be read in Latin. While reference has frequently been made in the introductory notes to pertinent books and periodicals, no effort has been made to add a formal bibliography with each document. Most of the better books in American Catholic history contain bibliographies, and for all the essential works published up to three years ago the editor's A Guide to American Catholic History (Milwaukee: 1959) will serve the purpose. The editor is conscious of the fact that some readers may feel the need for more of a commentary than they will find in the introductory notes. An effort was made to supply the necessary background for a proper understanding of each document; nonetheless, a few over-all comments may help to clarify certain matters that recur in a number of the entries. This is especially true where the material touches on ecclesiastical points of a somewhat technical nature that are often not familiar to the lay reader. Excerpt from American Catholics and the Roman Question The following pages are an expansion Of an article published by me on the same subject in the American Catholic Quarterly Review, January 1892. Certain qualified judges, whose desire was for me a command, having urged me to publish it separately, I felt it my duty to somewhat enlarge its scope and reinforce its argument. It is unnecessary to say that I have by no means either the intention or the pretension of exhausting such a subject in so few pages. I have proposed to myself primarily to Show clearly and frankly the Catholic point of View from which the Roman question should be regarded, indicating the principal considerations which should be taken into account in a true conception and solution of it, and thus to disengage it from those prejudices and ambiguities with which the best intentioned people sometimes surround it. Excerpt from Roman Catholics in America Falsifying History and Poisoning the Minds of Protestant School Children Last year, one of the salaried officers of the State, delivered addresses in the public schools, repeating the lesson she learned from the Catholic text book which is taught in our Public Schools. Miss Parish not only defended the use of the State's money in the Catholic religious schools, but she defended Bloody Queen Mary, and said that Queen Elizabeth had persecuted the Catholics, as ferociously as Mary did the Protestants. Evidently Miss Parish got her lesson out of the same book that duped the boy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
