Excerpt from The Celtic Church in Britain and Ireland The following translation, originally suggested by Mr. Whitley Stokes, was undertaken with the permission of the editors of the Rea/encyklopda'z'e fz'er protestantz'sc/ze Tkeologz'e zwa' Kz'rcke, in the tenth volume of which periodical the article first appeared, and with the approval of the author, who was, however, unfortunately prevented by a serious illness from seeing the proof -sheets as they passed through the press. But I was fortu nate in obtaining the kind assistance of other scholars. The work of translation was carried out under the constant supervision of Mr. Stokes himself, Professor Oliver Elton, Mr. Alfred Nutt, and of my brother, Professor Kuno Meyer. To them I am indebted for many valuable sugges tions and criticisms of which I eagerly availed myself; but for any shortcomings that may still be found I am alone responsible. A. Meyer. Excerpt from Ireland and the Celtic Church: A History of Ireland From St. Patrick to the English Conquest in 1172 I have often been asked to recommend a history of Ireland, embodying the result of the latest investigations, and telling a very chequered story in an interesting way. I have been unable to name any work fulfilling these conditions. Mr. Skene's learned volumes embody the result of modern investigations, but they deal as much with Scotland as with Ireland; while the older historians, such as Lanigan, King, and Todd, though very learned and accurate, are largely controversial and most certainly not light reading. I have endeavoured in the following pages to avoid controversy as far as possible, and have necessarily been obliged to make the story as interesting as I could. The form of the book explains the reason why. The lectures contained therein were originally delivered as public prelections in the Divinity-school of Trinity College. As Professor of Ecclesiastical History in the University of Dublin I am bound to lecture twice a week during two terms of the academic year, but no one is obliged to attend my classes. If I wish, there fore, to have an audience, I must attract one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Celtic Church in Ireland: The Story of Ireland and Irish Christianity From Before the Time of St. Patrick to the Reformation The study of the organisation of the Celtic Church in Ireland has suffered greatly from having been pursued almost invariably in the light of modern Church systems, and with a constant effort to recon cile it with them. The effect has been to obscure or to keep out of sight its altogether unique features. If any justification is needed for another book on Irish history, the best apology the present writer can offer is that he has at least tried his utmost to regard and represent the facts with an unbiassed mind, and from an independent point of view.
