Premier Pentecostal historian Vinson Synan shares for the first time his engaging personal assessment of and involvement in the extraordinary events of the last 100 years that gave birth to the charismatic and Pentecostal movements. Because of his unique position and participation in most of these events, Synan offers a rare and fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the phenomenal events that took place when the Holy Spirit fell at Azusa Street; the subsequent formation of the Pentecostal denominations; the surprising birth of the charismatic renewal; the emergence of charismatic Catholicism; the Toronto Blessing; and beyond. Because Synan is so widely respected across denominational lines for his scholarship and balance, his candid eyewitness memoir will rivet all who walk in the fullness of the Holy Spirit, as well as professors, students, and curious onlookers. A once-in-a-lifetime perspective!

The book is divided into three parts. Part One provides a thematic analysis and exegetical commentary on all the relevant biblical and cognate literature, including Josephus, Philo and the Mishnah. Part Two investigates the thinking of key Christian theologians on the Holy Spirit, from the Apostolic Fathers to eighteenth century authors such as John Wesley and Jonathan Edwards. Part Three examines more recent writings on the Spirit, from the nineteenth century onwards, including major systematic theologians such as Schleiermacher, Barth and Moltmann, as well as biblical scholars such as James D G Dunn, Gordon Fee and Gerd Theissen. Thiselton concludes the entire study by identifying seven fundamental themes, and calling for greater dialogue between mainstream scholarship and contemporary leaders of the Pentecostal and Renewal movements.

"'What in the World is God Doing?' asks Vinson Synan. Evil has swept the earth in the twentieth century-the bloodiest in human history. Yet this century has also seen an astounding outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Writing with both a historian's perspective and prophetic urgency, Synan helps us understand our times. Today, God is giving great gifts in times of great trouble. In the Latter Days, describes the Pentecostal outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the twentieth century. It is the greatest revival in human history. It has touched millions of lives, reached across denominational barriers, restored spiritual gifts to Christian life, and permanently reshaped Christianity. The Pentecostal movement began humbly in a Kansas farmhouse and a shabby Los Angeles meeting hall. It spread rapidly throughout the U.S., spawning several new fast-growing denominations, and within a few decades had taken hold in every continent. Then, in the 1960s, even Pentecostal Christians were amazed when a neo-Pentecostal movement erupted in the mainline Protestant denominations and the charismatic renewal unexpectedly appeared in the Catholic Church. In the Latter Days tells the whole dramatic story of God's Pentecostal working our day--a day of great evil and--a day of great blessing."--Publisher's information.

The Church of the Holy Spirit, written by Russian priest and scholar Nicholas Afanasiev (1893–1966), is one of the most important works of twentieth-century Orthodox theology. Afanasiev was a member of the “Paris School” of émigré intellectuals who gathered in Paris after the Russian revolution, where he became a member of the faculty of St. Sergius Orthodox Seminary. The Church of the Holy Spirit, which offers a rediscovery of the eucharistic and communal nature of the church in the first several centuries, was written over a number of years beginning in the 1940s and continuously revised until its posthumous publication in French in 1971. Vitaly Permiakov's lucid translation and Michael Plekon's careful editing and substantive introduction make this important work available for the first time to an English-speaking audience.

After three- quarters of a century, Dr. Abraham Kuyper's exhaustive study of the work of the Holy Spirit -- how available for the first time in a paperback edition -- still stands undiminished as a comprehensive Protestant statement about a central but much-misunderstood part of the Christian faith. "I have made an effort," Dr. Kuyper writes in his preface, "to represent the work of the Holy Spirit in its organic relations, so that the reader may survey the entire domain. And in surveying, who is not surprised at the ever-widening dimensions of the work of the Holy Spirit in all the things that pertain to God and man?" The 123 brief sections that make up this work first appeared in the Heraut, a Dutch religious weekly of which Dr. Kuyper served as editor. So it is that this profound exposition is lucidly written in the language of the ordinary people for whose spiritual growth he was deeply concerned.
