Excerpt from The Chemistry of Rubber In almost every direction there is ground for controversy. Every endeavour has been made in the following pages to give an impartial review of the published work, and at the same time views have been advanced Which, in the judgment of the author, are most in accord with the facts. The monograph is intended for those interested in rubber from a chemical point of View, and the description of technical practice has, therefore, been limited to the details Which are necessary for a clear insight into the chemical questions involved. Excerpt from The Chemistry of the Rubber Industry The object of the series of volumes collected together under the general title Outlines of Industrial Chemistry is to provide students and persons employed on the technical side of any particular industry with a handbook explaining the chemical aspect of the operations carried on in that industry. It is hoped, too, that the series may be found useful and interesting to many business heads and subordinates who are employed mainly in the office, but who still take an interest in the processes by which their dividends or salaries are earned. Excerpt from The Analysis of Rubber It was with a clear recognition of the usefulness of reviews of this character that a Committee of the American Chemical Society recommended the publication of the two series of mono graphs under the auspices of the Society. Two rather distinct purposes are to be served by these mono graphs. The first purpose, whose fulfilment will probably ren der to chemists in general the most important service, is to pre sent the knowledge available upon the chosen topic in a readable form, intelligible to those whose activities may be along a wholly different line. Many chemists fail to realize how closely their investigations may be connected with other work which on the surface appears far afield from their own. These monographs will enable such men to form closer contact with the work of chemists in other lines of research. The second purpose is to pro mote research in the branch of science covered by the mono graph, by furnishing a well digested survey of the progress already made in that field and by pointing out directions in which investigation needs to be extended. To facilitate the attainment of this purpose, it is intended to include extended references to the literature, which will enable anyone interested to follow up the subject in more detail. If the literature is so voluminous that a complete bibliography is impracticable, a critical selection will be made of those papers which are most important. Excerpt from Rubber Manufacture: The Cultivation, Chemistry, Testing, and Manufacture of Rubber, With Sections on Reclamation of Rubber and the Manufacture of Rubber Substitutes The manufacture of numerous inorganic fillers and their proper use in rubber compounding are given in full as well as the various processes employed for fabricating rubber goods. The apparatus used in all parts of the industry is fully illustrated and described. The chemical and physical properties of the latex and rubber, including the production of synthetic caoutchouc, are fully discussed. Chapters have also been included on the chemical analysis and phys ical testing of rubber and its compounds and the various theories of vulcanization. While the attempt has been made to present the technical fea tures of the subject in a scientific manner so that the volume will be of value to students of this subject, it is believed that a large part of the volume will be of interest to the non-technical reader. Both classes of readers will no doubt be interested in the attempts to point the way for the future development of this most important product. This book has its origin in a proposal made a few years ago that I should collaborate with Dr H. J. Stern in the production of a third edition of his well-known text-book entitled Rubber: Natural and Synthetic. The sugges tion was that I should contribute a series of chapters on synthetic rubbers. Although, in the event, it has not proved possible to publish the full book in the form originally planned, it was apparent that, with some restructuring, the material which I had collected would be valuable as an independent summary of the chemistry and technology of synthetic rubbers. It is in this form that the material is now offered. The primary purpose of this book is to provide a brief up-to-date survey of the principal types of synthetic rubber which have been and are currently available. Two classes of material are included which are regarded by some as being thermoplastics rather than rubbers, namely, plasticised polyvinyl chloride and the thermoplastic synthetic rubbers. The topics which are covered for each main family of synthetic rubbers are (i) the sources of the monomers, (ii) polymerisation procedures and the effects of important polymerisation variables upon the rubber produced, (iii) the types of rubber currently available commercially, (iv) interesting aspects of the compounding of the rubbers, with special reference to such matters as vulcanisation, reinforcement, protection against degradation, and (where appropriate) plasticisation, and (v) an indication of applications.

Excerpt from India-Rubber Laboratory Practice IN these pages an attempt is made to give the specialized practical information - at least in broad out lines - required by chemists of sound general training who may be called upon, in whatever capacity, to deal with india-rubber and its accessories. The botany and theoretical chemistry of india-rubber, with which it has become almost common form to embellish all books on the subject, are here barely mentioned. More reluctantly, two important branches of science applied to india-rubbera Viz., the production of the raw material and the mechanical testing of manufactured rubber, have also been passed over, mainly because they are as yet in the mere beginnings of giving rise to systematic laboratory practice. Excerpt from Rubber, Its Production, Chemistry and Synthesis in the Light of Recent Research: A Practical Handbook for the Use of Rubber Cultivators, Chemists, Economists and Others To emphasise the great interest which attaches at the present time to all questions relating to rubber is unnecessary. During recent years this raw material has taken a position of very considerable and increasing importance in the industrial life of the world, as will be at once evident upon consideration of the somewhat dry statistics which we shall have occasion to quote. One result of the tremendous rise in price which occurred in 1910 as the result of attempts to control the market for this product, has been to establish, as matters of every-day concern, the study of planting problems, and researches on the synthesis of rubber. We thought that it would be of interest to collect into a single volume the scattered accounts of the work and views of various writers on the subject which have been published in a number of journals, some of which are not easy to procure, adding to these our own observations. We have sought in these pages to refer, as far as possible, to everything relating either to the cultivation or to the modern chemistry of rubber. The first section of the book deals with natural rubber, attention being especially devoted to the study of plantation rubber, the appearance of which on the market has had unexpected results. The large amount of capital invested in the various exploiting companies, and the great number of the latter, are sufficient in themselves to justify the prominence we have given to this first section, were it only to correct, by means of the statistical information and costs of production repeatedly given, ideas - often absurdly incorrect - which are daily echoed by the financial reviews. In this section we have also found a place, in keeping with their daily increasing importance, for the resinous rubbers, and for reclaimed rubber. The second section deals with the formation, the properties, the analysis, and the constitution of natural rubber. This resume of the modern chemistry of rubber forms a natural transition step towards the section dealing with its syntheses.
