Excerpt from The Churches of Rouen The descriptive chapters of this little book are the result of personal observations made during a visit to Rouen in May 1900, undertaken for the purpose of examining and photographing the chief churches of the city. While thus employed I made use of sundry guide-books, French and English, and collected all the information I could from vergers and others connected with the churches. The scaffolding which at that time covered the west front of the Cathedral rendered it impossible for me to examine this part of the church; any description, moreover, that I could have given would have been of little value in pointing out features to be studied, as many, when the scaffolding is removed on the completion of the restoration, will have been altered, if they have not entirely vanished. The west front of St. Maclou was also undergoing some repairs, and owing to the overhead wires of the tramways it is no longer possible to get a satisfactory general photographic view of St. Ouen from the N.W., so that in three cases the blocks illustrating the book have been made from photographs taken some time ago; all the rest are from my own negatives taken in 1900. I obtained much historical information from a book published in 1847, entitled Album Rouennais, illustrated by lithographs and written by Charles Richard, Keeper of the Municipal Archives and permanent Secretary of the Royal Academy of Rouen; also from a charming and picturesquely written book, the Story of Rouen in the "Mediaeval Towns" series by Theodore Andrea Cook, published in 1899. My thanks are due to Canon Barrie for permission kindly granted to photograph the interior of the Cathedral, and to M. Edouard Julien, the intelligent sacristan of St. Ouen (well known to most visitors to Rouen), who obtained for me a like permission from the Cure of his church. The great minsters where religion had intrenched herself while wave after wave of barbarism swept over the land, were rapidly reconstructed; the Faith rose again indomitable, the true Phoenix. It is only the student of old records who can fairly realize the constantly recurring destruction of these edifices: to such their rebuilding presents itself in all its significance. That rebuilding was, each time, on a more splendid scale. The history of strue tures such as those represented in the following photographs may be summed up thus, as regards the periods that elapsed from the introduction of Chris tianity until that at which we have now arrived, and even to a more recent date. They were erected by pious hands in humble wise; they were burnt, they were rebuilt, they were reburnt, they were again rebuilt, and so on, time after time; but each new building was on a larger scale and with more costly materials. At last the destroyer himself, as in the case of the Normans in France and Italy, became the reconstructor. He used, it is true, the old stones over again, but he added to them, and while for a long time the Roman architectural details furnished models for imitations the style was changed piecemeal, if not in general character, by every man who used it. The Romanesque styles of design display the Roman elements employed in a freer spirit and adapted to a wider range of service. No one in Amiens has power to grant permission, and as some short delay is likely to attend the issue of this permit from the Government office, application should be made by letter a few weeks beforehand.
