Brief Candles (1930), Aldous Huxley's fifth collection of short fiction, consists of the following four short stories: "Chawdron" "The Rest Cure" "The Claxtons" "After the Fireworks" Brief Candles takes its title from a line in William Shakespeare's Macbeth, from Macbeth's famous soliloquy: "Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

This carefully crafted ebook: "BRAVE NEW WORLD" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Set in London in the year AF 632 (2540 AD) this political and dystopian science fiction novel, paints a chilling picture of a consumerist society where being a misfit spells utter doom for a person. Here assisted reproductive technologies, mindless sex and orgies, and guided rules for expressing of human emotions reduce relationships to mechanical farces. Written in 1931, the novel is still relevant today and more so because, as Huxley mentioned in "Brave New World Revisited", our real world is turning into the world of the novel much faster than we originally thought! Aldous Huxley (1894–1963) was an English writer, novelist, philosopher, humanist, pacifist, and satirist. He later became interested in spiritual subjects such as parapsychology and philosophical mysticism. By the end of his life, Huxley was widely acknowledged as one of the pre-eminent intellectuals of his time. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in seven different years.

Brave New World is Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novel. Borrowing from The Tempest , Huxley imagines a genetically-engineered future where life is pain-free but meaningless. The book heavily influenced George Orwell’s 1984 and science-fiction in general. The novel examines a futuristic society, called the World State, that revolves around science and efficiency. In this society, emotions and individuality are conditioned out of children at a young age, and there are no lasting relationships because “every one belongs to every one else” (a common World State dictum). Huxley begins the novel by thoroughly explaining the scientific and compartmentalized nature of this society, beginning at the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre, where children are created outside the womb and cloned in order to increase the population. The reader is then introduced to the class system of this world, where citizens are sorted as embryos to be of a certain class. The embryos, which exist within tubes and incubators, are provided with differing amounts of chemicals and hormones in order to condition them into predetermined classes. Embryos destined for the higher classes get chemicals to perfect them both physically and mentally, whereas those of the lower classes are altered to be imperfect in those respects. These classes, in order from highest to lowest, are Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon. The Alphas are bred to be leaders, and the Epsilons are bred to be menial labourers.

Two of the most famous pieces of non-fiction by Aldous Huxley (best known for Brave New World), The Doors of Perception details his experiences on the mind-altering drug mescaline, while Heaven and Hell details the relationships between mysticism, art, and sense perception that these experiences helped Huxley to explore and develop. He analogizes the mental states achievable through the use of mind-altering substances to very forms of religious self-flagellation, and also theorizes that they might be used as a form of treatment for psychological ailments. The two works have been significant influences on thinkers in this field, as well as writers, theologians, and philosophers.
