He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much-filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. This was one of 33 novels and short story collections that he wrote, mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. While his fictional accounts of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion are highly romanticized, his details of Legion uniforms, training, equipment and barrack room layout are generally accurate, which has led to unproven suggestions that Wren himself served with the legion.

The Collected Works of P. C. Wren showcase the author's mastery in crafting captivating stories set in the exotic landscape of the French Foreign Legion. This collection includes four novels and stories that highlight Wren's detailed descriptions of military life, honor, camaraderie, and adventure. The vivid imagery and intense narratives immerse readers in the struggles and triumphs of the legionnaires, making it a compelling read for fans of historical fiction and military literature. Wren's eloquent prose and meticulous attention to detail bring to life a bygone era of colonial warfare, while his exploration of themes such as loyalty and sacrifice adds depth to the storytelling. P. C. Wren's own experiences as a British officer in the Indian Army during World War I undoubtedly influenced his writings on military life and honor. His firsthand knowledge of the camaraderie and challenges faced by soldiers in the field lends authenticity to his narratives, making them resonate with readers on a personal level. Wren's deep respect for the men who served in the Foreign Legion shines through in his works, portraying them not just as soldiers, but as complex individuals with their own stories and struggles. I highly recommend the Collected Works of P. C. Wren to readers who appreciate well-researched historical fiction with rich character development and a strong sense of adventure. Wren's works offer a unique perspective on the human experience in the harsh environment of colonial military campaigns, making them a true classic in the genre.

Michael "Beau" Geste is the protagonist. The main narrator (among others) is his younger brother John. The three Geste brothers are a metaphor for the British upper class values of a time gone by, and "the decent thing to do" is the leitmotif of the trilogy. The Geste brothers are orphans and have been brought up by their aunt at Brandon Abbas. The rest of Beau's band are mainly Isobel, Claudia and Augustus. When a precious jewel known as the "Blue Water" goes missing, Beau leaves Britain to join the French Foreign Legion, followed by his brothers, Digby (his twin) and John. Beau Sabreur and Beau Ideal are sequel novels and Good Gestes is a collection of short tales mainly about the Geste brothers and their American friends Hank and Buddy. The collected Gestes-the first volume of a four volume set There are some works of fiction and their characters, that are familiar to practically everyone-whether they have read the books or not; King Solomon's Mines and Alan Quatermain, The Prisoner of Zenda and Rudolf Rassendyll, The Hound of the Baskervilles with Sherlock Holmes and his faithful Doctor John Watson and The Thirty Nine Steps and Richard Hannay, to name but a few. Cinema, television, radio and even comics have all played a part in ensuring that books such as these and their central characters have become cultural icons that are forever part of the collective consciousness. There can be no doubt that the same applies to P. C. Wren's novel Beau Geste, which features the memorable John Geste and his brothers. Wren, more than any other author, was responsible for bringing an awareness of the French Foreign Legion to the public. Having served in the Legion he knew it well, and through his popular and romantic novels, his tales of regiments of mercenaries comprised of the dregs of society, thieves, murderers and professional soldiers of fortune, it quickly captured the public imagination. So too did one of the Legion's most infamous battlegrounds-the burning sands of colonial North Africa. Wren created a legend of the most potent kind-an image of a straggling line of tired, sweating men upon the endless dunes of the desert, all wearing the famous kepi-blanc with its familiar neck flap. These 'heroes' would battle their despotic officers as readily as the marauding Bedouin tribesmen and knew what it was to 'march or die ' It is often the case that modern readers know of the best known character or most famous work of an author but remain unaware that, at the time they first published, the public demanded more such adventures. There are, in fact, four full length novels and a number of short stories featuring the Gestes and the Foreign Legion and all have been gathered in this special four volume Leonaur collection for readers to own and enjoy. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
