Excerpt from Peacham's Compleat Gentleman, 1634: With an Introduction Surrey and Wyatt would have found themselves as little at home as did Raleigh. The bitterness of political and religious strife shattered the unity of an ideal which had been the proudest ornament of the previous age; there were henceforth two standards by which the gentleman was measured, and Cavalier and Puritan divided the suffrages of society. Excerpt from Peacham's Compleat Gentleman, 1634: With an Introduction by G. S. Gordon Other and less invidious causes had contributed to the change. In the history of the English gentleman the growth of the idea of Public Duty is almost as noticeable as his transformation into the Courtier. It had made some progress under Richard II, only to be miserably shattered in the wars of the succession; under the Tudors it steadily made way, and when the troubles of religion began it threatened the destruction of everything that had made the gentleman an amiable companion and a courteous enemy. It was something of this feeling, joined to a narrow sort of nationalism, which inspired that sturdy band of 'anglo-saxons of whom Cheke and Ascham were the leaders. They had welcomed the revival of classical learning and could not help admiring the high ideal of the Courtier, drawn so splendidly by Castiglione but they feared the subtle genius of Italy, and her seducing influence on the morals of their country and the purity of the English tongue. As it turned out, their fear for English morals was ungrounded and Italy only made way for France, a much less worthy guest. Excerpt from A Gentleman's Gentleman I have met a good many in my time who pro fessed to know a lot about Sir Nicolas Steele. I am not going to contradict them here, nor do I Wish to write the life of a man whom I have served, on and ce, for more years than I care to remember. If ever that's to be done, it must be the business of one who got his learning at school. All that I can speak about is that which I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears during the days when I was servant to him. And if my word can do any thing to set him right before the world, in SO far as he can be set right, I give that word willingly, as is his due. Excerpt from The Gentleman Let no bedressed, bescented passer curl his lip at this impudent theft of an epithet claimed as property of his favored few. On the part of the auctioneer there is no theft: on the part of the scornful passer there may be usurpa tion. The auctioneer necessarily, unconscious ly, speaks under sway of the advanced senti ment, which recognizes that within every Christian heart live the germs of that high Ideal, the manifestation of which in moving, incorporate reality receives the choice name of gentleman. The universal giving and ao cepting of this name is a homage to the beau ty of what the name represents, - an aspira tion, however remote and modest, for the pos session of the refined substance. Excerpt from The Business of a Gentleman "Bobby, tell them the story of the Voluntary Inspector." "Not for worlds!" "Oh, you must." "No, it's too awful. It would shock every one. It would corrupt this innocent boy." "Don't be a fool!" "These two fellows on the sofa, I never met them till to-day. It will turn out that she is an aunt of one of them and I shall have to fight a duel." "We have no aunts," said one. "None whatever," said the other. "And I," said the boy above mentioned, "am an incorruptibility." "Very well," said Bobby, "but mind, I don't answer for the consequences." First he lit his pipe. They were gathered round the fire in the hall of a country house, having returned from shooting the earliest partridges that the law permits to be shot. Yardale was their host. He lay sideways in a large chair, with his legs over one arm and his neck over the other, a pipe full of hot tobacco waving perilously above his eyes as he gazed up at a group of voluptuous figures painted on the ceiling. He was twenty-six years old. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
