Excerpt from The Dental Times, 1869, Vol. 6: A Quarterly Journal of Dental Science To prepare protoxide of nitrogen for inhalation, then, great care must be taken to preserve its purity; consequently it becomes important to maintain, as nearly as possible, an equal temperature during the process of its manufacture, and, should any nitric oxide to be formed, to deoxidize or remove it, which is best done by a solution of ferrous sulphate, (sulphate of the protoxide of iron, ) and washing in water. From what we have said, this washing in water, and keeping the gas for any length of time over water, must be attended with great loss, as much of the gas is thereby absorbed. This may be, to a great extent, avoided by employing water at an elevated temperature, or a strong solution of common salt for the same purpose. When about to be inhaled as an anaesthetic, great care must be taxen that no oxygen or air become mixed with the protoxide; otherwise the peculiar effects described by Sir Humphry Davy are} observed instead of anaesthesia. William Ewart Gladstone (1809-98) was the outstanding statesman of the Victorian age. He was an MP for over sixty years, a long serving and exceptional Chancellor of the Exchequer and four times Prime Minister. As the leader of the Liberal party over three decades, he personified the values and policies of later Victorian Liberalism. Gladstone, however, was always more than just a politician. He was also a considerable scholar, a dedicated Churchman and had a range of interests and connections that made him, in many respects, the quintessential Victorian. Yet important aspects of Gladstone's life have received relatively little recent attention from historians. This study reappraises Gladstone by focusing on five themes: his reputation; his representation in visual and material culture; his personal life; his role as an official; and the ethical and political basis of his international policies. This collection of original, often multidisciplinary studies, provides new perspectives on Gladstone's public and private life. As such, it illustrates the many-sided nature of his career and the complexities of his personality.
