Excerpt from The Developement of Religious Life in the Modern Christian Church These are passages of Scripture in which Martin Luther would have gloried. They were to him true bread of life. They express the great doctrine which was the life of his soul, the essence of his reformation, the foundation of all that he was and did. Therefore, since we are now to reflect upon this man's works, Opinions and influence, it is well to commence with an extract from that book which he loved so dearly, and with a passage which sets forth the truth he upheld so well. Excerpt from The Cross of Christ: Studies in the History of Religion and the Inner Life of the Church A delineation, briefly presenting in its leading features the historic course of development which gave rise successively to these main forms and phases of the religion of the Cross, may, on account of the beauty and grandeur of its object, be regarded as secured against the suspicion of micrologic dul ness. The history of the Cross necessarily presents a reflected image of the history of Christianity itself, and indeed a more instructive and important one than any other similar contem plation, under the veil of an emblem, of the rise and growth of our religion hitherto, which might in any way be attempted. Specially upon a closer examination of its preparatory history - in the remarkable and partly enigmatical airy reflections which, in the form of so many a cruciform symbol upon the art monuments of the pre-christian as of modern Heathen dom, serve as heralds and precursors of the cultus of the Cross in the Christian Church - does our subject awaken interest in every one at all endowed with historic culture, and a sense for the appreciation of higher ethical endeavours and problems. The title Contribution to the Philosophy of History, pertains with unquestionable right to a treatment of the subject designed and executed from such standpoint; even though from time to time an indispensable entering into the details of the controversies with regard to the archeology of worship or of art, as also an examination of the more important phenomena of the dogmatic or mystic-ascetic literature bearing upon our subject, should occasion many deviations from the mode of treatment ordinarily prevailing in works on the philosophy of history. Excerpt from The Life of Christians: During the First Three Centuries of the Church; A Series of Sermons on Church History IN giving to the English public the following dis courses on the History of the Primitive Church, I have been actuated neither by the eloquence of the language, nor the novelty of the views contained in them, but simply by the lively and practical piety which they display, and the necessity which seems to have arisen in these days for exhortations of the kind. At a time when German theology has assumed so questionable a character, and has become so justly suspected in a country Where religious speculation has always been confined within modest bounds, I should have hesitated at introducing a new work from thence, unless I were fully convinced of the general scriptural integrity of its views. In this case, however, the difficulty has been entirely removed by the fact, that these Sermons have for their groundwork Dr Neander's celebrated History of the Early Church, a work known in this country through the admirable version of it by the Reverend Henry Rose, whose preface bears a handsome testimony to its general orthodoxy, and which was pronounced by his brother, the late Christian advocate, to be the most truly Christian history of the church ever yet published. I trust this will be a guarantee sufficient for the general rectitude of the views here taken, and shall therefore. Excerpt from Modern Methods in Church Work: The Gospel Renaissance This book is timely. It speaks to an opportunity. An intelligent discussion of the best methods Of church work is one Of the strongest needs of the times. It is Often said that What the Church needs, to secure her purity and progress, is to get back to Christ. There is a truth in this, although it is some times over-stated. We have some inheritance Of mis takes in the theology of the fathers, and it would doubtless advance the Simplicity of theological state ment and conduce to the unity and harmony of the Church, if we would be content to express truth in the divine Simplicity which marked his words. But we have departed from the Simplicity of the early Church quite as much in the principles and methods of church work as in the forms Of theological statement. The simple ways Of apostolic times have very much been lost Sight of in the modern administration of church affairs: Both in the principles of Christian life and in our ways of expressing them, we have gone a long way from the early Church, and without any Sharp sense of our departure. Excerpt from The Evolution of Early Christianity: A Genetic Study of First-Century Christianity in Relation to Its Religious Environment Of Christian origins must first orient himself in the life of the times, if he would understand the genesis of the new religion as well as the literature it produced. The possibility of obtaining this orientation has greatly increased in recent years. Much help may now be derived from the historical study of religions as a whole, which supplies certain broad principles capable of general application. These results emphasize the necessity of taking account of psychological processes in the rise and development of all religions, and they make clear the importance of social and cultural forces for the determination of religious phenomena. But more immediate help comes from Observing the actual historical situation in which the early Christians lived. Within the last half-century various scholars have devoted themselves to the study of later Judaism, with the result that the historian can now know, for the most part, the actual religious situation which conditioned the lives of the first disciples on Jewish soil. Excerpt from A Social Theory of Religious Education What consequences for religious education follow from the now widely accepted social interpretation of the Christian mes sage? The present work is an attempt to answer this question. The answer is not simple. For the social message does not require us merely to insert this or that new duty into our present scheme of living, but also to judge every detail of conduct from a higher point of view. We are required to organize the whole of life upon a different level. It would be strange indeed if the new meaning that this gives to every-day affairs did not change our outlook upon child life. If we are to be logical and practical in our social Christianity, we must revise our policies with respect to children at least as much as our policies with respect to adults. The chapters that follow undertake to show the directions that this revision will need to take. As we proceed, it will appear that the whole perspective of religious education undergoes a change. The central purpose, to begin with, grows more specific because the nature of good ness is seen to be as concrete as the neighbor who lives next door. Christian experience comes out of the clouds, because in our dealings with our brother whom we have seen we are deal ing with the Father whom we have not seen - yes, we here come into relation with what is deepest in his character and purposes. To Christian ears these statements do not sound strange, per haps, yet when they are applied to the religious life of the young they do sing a new melody. A profounder significance attaches to the will of a child, and especially to his relations with persons, whether children or adults.
