Excerpt from The Development of Shakespeare as a Dramatist Why it is that the drama cannot at any time wholly break away from the prejudices, tastes, [and ideals of the public for which it is written, M. Edelstand Du Meril has clearly stated 1 In the drama the per sonality of the author is effaced even more completely than in the epic or other forms of poetry. It is no longer he who speaks. All the figures return suc cessively to life, a little more talkative than they were originally, and express in orderly sequence their feelings and their desires. Each of the dramatis persona) acts for himself and speaks according to the ideas and sentiments that are peculiarly his own. You assist at a genuine representation of life, and follow step by step the consequences of acts you see the characters developing by Vivid and convincing action in which each will is expressed by its acts, each act is related to its causes, and is brought to completion in its first results. But the inspiration of the work hasn't at all that ego tistical spirit, disdainful of the outside world, which characterizes the other forms of art; this is no longer a monologue of the poet singing to himself for his own pleasure; this author tries by what his drama represents to awake in others the poetical ideas which have. Excerpt from Shakespeare: The Man: An Attempt to Find Traces of the Dramatist's Personal Character in His Dramas Such materials as there are for Shakes peare's personal history, or for the history of any one connected with him, have been gathered with the most loving and persevering industry. Unhappily, they amount to very little. Entries in munic ipal records, names in a will, a lease, or an inventory, tell hardly anything of the life or character of the man. That orange has now been squeezed dry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Life of William Shakespeare More than five years have passed since the appearance, amid the stress of war, of the last edition of this work. It is of good omen that the interval, which has brought back peace, has witnessed at home and abroad a development beyond pre-war limits of Shakespeare's vogue. Excerpt from Shakspere as a Playwright In this study I have sought to apply to Shakspere the method of analysis already employed in my critical biog raphy of Moliere. Unfortunately, we know far less about the facts of Shakspere's life than we do about the details of Moliere's career; yet I believe that it is feasible to trace the growth of the English poet as a practical play wright almost as clearly as we can follow the equally im portant evolution of the French dramatist. And as this book is designed to deal with Shakspere only as a play wright, attention has here been focused on the plays which are most instructive as plays, rather than on those which display other qualities of his genius more splendidly. For example, the 'comedy of Errors, ' a comparatively empty play of his immaturity, is m a sense more significant than 'king Lear, ' one of the noblest monuments of his loftiest period, because the 'comedy of Errors' discloses his early conquest of the art of construction, whereas 'king Lear, ' however appealing it may be in its poetry, is less rigor ous in its plotting. Excerpt from The Life of William Shakespeare: Including Many Particulars Respecting the Poet and His Family Never Before Published The tide of public curiosity in matters of Shakespearian enquiry has of late years set almost exclusively in the direction of biography; the minutest facts respecting the personal history of the World's Poet receiving more attention, and creating wider discussion, than the happiest illustrations of the great works on which his reputation is established. It is not difficult to assign a reason for this preference, for, although the higher branches of criticism are undoubtedly more important, perhaps, even, when fully understood, more interesting and attractive, biographical disquisitions have the advantage of being readily appreciated by all; and, as Shakespeare was the most eminent genius the world has ever produced, it is not surprising that details of his existence, information of his reality when he lived and moved as one of ourselves, should be sought for with so much avidity. We should also recollect that minute historical researches never appear to so great advantage, nor are they productive of so much utility, as when they tend to unfold the private actions and characters of those great men whose deeds or works have exercised beneficial influences on the progress of mankind. Excerpt from On the Received d104 of Shakespeare's Dramatic Writings and Its Improvement The Notes on Shakespeare which compose the present Volume were begun as a diversion from abstruser studies; but the Author soon found that to do anything effectual in this way required nearly as much diligent research and patient thought as to discuss the Principles of Value, the Metaphysics of Vision, or the Theory of Reasoning. The attractiveness of the employment, nevertheless, drew him on, till his memoranda had, in the progress of years, accumulated to a considerable bulk, from which he now offers a selection to the Public. Should it turn out that he has succeeded in throwing light on any portion of the text of our great dramatist, it will be no small addition to the pleasure he has already enjoyed in making the attempt.
