The Dhammapada: one of three new editions of the books in Eknath Easwaran's Classics of Indian Spirituality series ''As irrigators guide water to their fields, as archers aim arrows, as carpenters carve wood, the wise shape their lives.'' - Dhammapada (145).... Dhammapada means ''the path of dharma,'' the path of truth, harmony, and righteousness. Capturing the living words of the Buddha, this much-loved scripture consists of verses organized by theme: thought, joy, anger, pleasure, and others. The Dhammapada is permeated with the power and practicality of one of the world's most appealing spiritual teachers. Rejecting superstition on the one hand and philosophical speculation on the other, the Buddha taught the path to the end of suffering and showed how we can achieve lasting joy. He spells out our choices with a refreshing realism and frankness. And he insists that we be spiritually self-reliant: ''All the effort must be made by you. Buddhas only point the way.'' Easwaran believed that we need nothing more than the Dhammapada to follow the way of the Buddha. His main qualification for interpreting the Dhammapada, he said, was that he knew from his own experience that these verses can transform our lives.

How did a decade that dawned with the Age of Aquarius end in Altamont and the Manson Family bloodbath? The 1960s were a time of revolution - political, social psychedelic, sexual. But there was another revolution that many historians forget the rise of a powerful current that permeated pop culture and has been a central influence on it ever since. It was a magical revolution - a revival of the occult. Previously rejected and ridiculed beliefs took centre stage, reaching the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, saturating the the hippies and flower power, hitting the big screen with Rosemary's Baby and the bookshelves with Lord of the Rings. The Tarot. I Ching, astrology, Kabbala, yogis, witchcraft, UFOs, Aleister Crowley. Yin Yang and the Tibetan Book of the Dead now became the common currency they are today. But the vibes went bad, the auras darkened. Did that darker undercurrent win out? Gary Lachman here charts this explosion, its rise and fall, and its enduring legacy --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

MOMIN The Great Poet Mughal Urdu Poet SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith MOMIN (1801-1852). With Ghalib and Zauq, Momin Khan Momin was one of the three great poets of Delhi and his poetry was loved by the common people. The main theme in his poetry is love, in the physical sense and the human sense... earthly and real. He belonged to a family of doctors and was tall and handsome and was also a physician who was also interested in astrology, playing chess and music. Mir was one of his teachers in the art of poetry. He composed seven long masnavi poems and hundreds of ghazals and ruba'is and also composed elegies on the deaths of his many mistresses. He wrote not only in Urdu, but in Persian and Arabic which he knew perfectly. Momin was essentially a poet of the earthly love which he expressed best in the form of ghazal. In celebrating romantic love in all its manifestations, he drew upon the purity of diction, deeply nuanced phrases, and indirect modes of expression. All these made way, sometimes, for a metaphysical apprehension of the phenomenon of love and the figure of the lover (Sufism). He fell from a roof and was badly injured and using astrology predicated his own death. This is the only translation of ghazals & ruba'is and it has the correct rhyme structure of the originals. Introduction on the Urdu Language, Urdu Poetry, Life & Times & Poetry and on the ghazal. A Selected Bibliography. Large Print (16pt) Large Format ('7 x'10) Edition 120 pages.
