The recurring phantom of someone Detective Joe Thursday suspects may have been his former partnerÑdespite the fact that no one else remembers himÑleads Joe to start asking questions nobody should ask about the history of the Dream Police, and how they really came into existence. The deeper he goes, the more isolated he becomes, and the more dangerous his world becomes. How far will Joe go to find the truth? And will his partner Katie Black go with him...or turn against him?

The Dream Police are starting to unravel as the truth about where they come from emerges. The biggest lie of all is about to turn Joe Thursday's world upside down, as he finally learns the secret about where he came from, and why. Until now, Joe thought he knew what nightmares were all about, but once he discovers the truth, he will confront the biggest nightmare of all: his own death.

Dream Police Lieutenants Joe Thursday and Katie Black have always been partners. At least, that's what they both remember. But if thatês true, why does Joe keep having recurring visions of a partner he never had? Is it just his imagination? With the Dreamscape constantly on the verge of destruction, what difference can one man's memory really make? The answer may be more important than any of them can guess.

Together Joe and Kate penetrate parts of the Dreamscape that are considered dangerous and off-limits. There is a bridge between the worlds where they may be able to get some of the information they need. When the other Dream Police find out what they're doing, the Nightmares are sent to stop them.
