Excerpt from The Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal, 1857, Vol. 6 Proceeding, after this, to examine the effects produced by a residence among mountains, both in the case of invalids, and of healthy individuals, I have been led to draw some practical conclusions as to the maladies which may be combated by this means, and at the same time as to such as are aggravated by the bracing atmosphere of high lands. Excerpt from Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal, 1844, Vol. 37 I propose, in the following Memoir, to offer some observations on the views recently published by Dr Samuel Brown Mr Knox, and Mr Rigg, concerning the compound nature of silicon, nitrogen, and carbon. Before entering, however, at any length on the discussion of these, I would consider, very briefly, some points connected with the general question of the simplicity and unity of matter. The great majority of chemists acknowledge the existence of some 55 simple or elementary substances. These are declared to be simple, not in virtue of any test of simplicity which the chemist has discovered and applied to them, but solely because they resist the decomposing or modifying action of all the forces which are, or at least are known to be, at man's disposal. The chemist, as it were, begins with the globe itself, and breaks it down into some thousand organic and inorganic compounds; these, in their turn, he resolves into some hundred less complex substances; and the latter, last of all, into the 55 bodies which are called simple. Excerpt from The Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal, Vol. 33: Exhibiting a View of the Progressive Discoveries and Improvements in the Sciences and the Arts; April-October, 1842 With respect to the heat from the internal source, if we re eet a moment, it will appear probable that it was formerly greater in amount, from a consideration of the phenomena which the most recent cataclysm has brought into view. The rents which we now see filled with protruded matter could not have been made by a force suficient to elevate the rocks in which they were made very much out of their original po sition, because in that case the rents would not probably have been filled. It was necessary that the strata should still rest on the melted matter when they were broken, in order that the pressure (operating, perhaps, in some other locality) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal, Vol. 27: Exhibiting a View of the Progressive Discoveries and Improvements in the Sciences and the Arts; April-October, 1839 But this relative importance of characters, the basis of the whole edifice of the arrangement - how was it to be estimated in its turn - how was it to be valued with certainty? Here two methods present themselves, which are equally certain. One, which is founded upon reasoning, directly infers the im portance of a character from the importance of the part which supplies it. In a vegetable, every thing contributes to the formation of the flower; every thing in the flower contributes to the formation of the embryo, or the new existence; the formation, then, of this new existence, or being, of the embryo.
