In light of the recent and ongoing surge of interest in Alfred Marshall's work, this new and original reference volume fills a gap in the literature through a detailed examination of his thought and of his contributions to economics and social science. The Companion places Alfred Marshall's ideas in their historical context, highlighting the many streams of social research originating from them. The contributors form a remarkable cast of leading experts, covering a spectrum of Marshallian themes and issues, including: - his life and work - background and influences - scope and methodology of economics - economic analysis - including distribution theory, industrial economics and money - social and political issues - relations with his contemporaries - the Marshallian tradition - relevance to contemporary economics. This comprehensive and multidisciplinary Companion illustrates the relevance of Marshall to present-day economic reality and as such will prove an invaluable reference tool for general economists and a wide ranging audience: historians of economic thought; economic, political and cultural historians; industrial, regional and development economists; economists interested in institutional, cognitive and evolutionary economics.

Arguably one of the most important economists who has lived, Ricardo's impact on the economics profession is immense. This unique and comprehensive Companion elucidates his significance and continuing legacy. Ricardo made major contributions to all fields of the subject, from monetary issues to value and income distribution, from capital accumulation, technical progress and economic growth to foreign trade and international specialisation, and from taxes to public debt. What he called the main problem of political economy, the distribution of income and wealth, is again back on the political and economic agenda with a vengeance. Leading experts in the field explore his influence and offer novel interpretations of received doctrines.

`In Alfred Marshall's theory of the human mind, the development of knowledge is conditioned, though not determined, by the context in which it occurs; by a natural extension, so is the interpretation, response to and use of knowledge. That is the organising principle of this book, and no one is better equipped to apply it than the team which produced The Elgar Companion to Alfred Marshall. What we can learn from these studies has wide application in economics - and beyond.'---Brian Loasby, University of Stirling, UK `The team responsible for producing the exemplary Elgar Companion to Alfred Marshall in 2006 has now assembled this complementary volume which contains an equally authoritative collection of studies dealing with the fortuna or intellectual and cultural impact of Marshallian economics in Britain, Europe, North America, Australasia, and Asia. Together the books make an invaluable contribution to the reassessment of Marshall's reputation and the diffusion of his economic ideas.'---Donald Winch, University of Sussex, UK This is a unique and detailed book which surveys the diffusion and reception of Alfred Marshall's ideas and the ways they have influenced the development of economic science up to the present day. This is an accessible and extremely readable work offering an interesting perspective on the national traditions of economic thought, in both English and non-English speaking countries, as well as on the work of leading economists. As this work demonstrates, the variety of responses elicited by Alfred Marshall's thought testifies to its richness as well as to the plurality of conceptions of the role and tasks of economics in different times and places. This book complements the authors' previous work The Elgar Companion to Alfred Marshall. The Impact of Alfred Marshall's Ideas will appeal to researchers and academics at all levels of economics and especially the history of economic thought.

This text presents Alfred Marshall’s final, unfinished, and unpublished book. His main volume, Principles of Economics, was first published in 1890, and was, for a long period of time, the textbook par excellence on which generations of economists were trained. Despite its success and its importance, the book, in its eight editions, testifies to some extent to the failure of Marshall’s original editorial project which should have consisted of multiple volumes and culminated with the publication of a final work on economic progress. Marshall’s death in 1924 made it impossible to realize his project, but many notes written for it have survived. These notes, collected here, constitute a fundamental element in fully understanding the thought and perspectives of this great economist and in appreciating his great modernity and wisdom.

This collection of essays offers a fresh and challenging interpretation which departs from the received views of two giants among the greatest economists of all times. Distinguished scholars of Marshall and Schumpeter engage in a lively discussion of their work and convincingly argue that, despite their differences, they shared a common drive towards a broader type of social science beyond economics. It is an intriguing account that will not fail to attract and fascinate the majority of readers. Maria Cristina Marcuzzo, Università di Roma, Italy Ever since the development of the theory of biological evolution in the middle of the nineteenth century, evolutionary doctrine has posed challenges to economics. These came directly from the work of Darwin and Huxley and indirectly through economic history and the juxtaposition of dynamics with comparative statics the approach widely adopted by economists by the end of the century. The eminent historians of economics, Yuichi Shionoya and Tamotsu Nishizawa, together with a distinguished team of specialists, have produced an important set of essays that examine the positions on evolution of Marshall and Schumpeter and the economists who surrounded them. This collection is a valuable contribution to the history of economics and is highly relevant to controversies that rage still in the economics discipline today. Craufurd Goodwin, Duke University, US Traditionally it was understood that while Marshall was the synthesizer of neoclassical economics, Schumpeter challenged the dynamic conception of the economy in place of the static structure of economics. While historians of economic thought rarely discuss the work of Alfred Marshall and Joseph Schumpeter jointly, the contributors to this book do exactly this from the perspective of evolutionary thought. This unique and original work contends that, despite the differences between Marshallian and Schumpeterian thinking, they both present formidable challenges to a broad type of social science beyond economics, particularly under the influence of the German historical school. In a departure from the received view on the nature of the works of Marshall and Schumpeter, the contributors explore their themes in terms of an evolutionary vision and method of evolution; social science and evolution; conceptions of evolution; and evolution and capitalism. This timely resource will provide a stimulus not only to Marshall and Schumpeter scholarship within the history of economic thought but also to the recent efforts of economists to explore a research field beyond mainstream equilibrium economics. It will therefore prove a fascinating read for academics, students and researchers of evolutionary and heterodox economics and historians of economic thought.

Alfred Marshall has traditionally been listed alongside pioneering 'neoclassical' economists. In this volume Neil Hart challenges this view, illuminating the ambiguities within Marshall's work, and exploring his reconciliation of two modes of thinking, equilibrium economics and evolutionary economics.
