Joseph A. Schumpeter was a monumental figure in the history and development of economics. This work brings together his brilliant lectures, delivered more than a century ago, in its first English-language paperback edition. Here, readers will discover Schumpeter's search for an economic science devoid of moral or political dogma. The Nature and Essence of Economic Theory works out what people should think of pure economics, what its nature is, what its methods and findings are, and where thought takes off from there. The book shows the limitations and weaknesses of nineteenth-century economics and how the field could be and was improved by establishing a fundamental differentiation between 'statistics' and 'dynamics'. To convey his arguments, Schumpeter uses certain axioms that form a consistent, self-contained system and show how sound economic science is based on facts and events rather than presuppositions or definitions. Schumpeter's larger aim, beyond a pedagogic tool, was to deduce changes in the market, trade, and exchange of goods and services. He defined the task of economy as the description of the system and its change tendencies. If that can be achieved unequivocally, without resorting to doctrine or dogma, then the field can be considered self-contained.

In this concise text, the distinguished American philosopher John Dewey compiled excerpts from the massive Progress and Poverty to provide those unfamiliar with Henry George's work with the essence of the author's thinking on economics. In his Foreword, Dewey noted, "It would require less than the fingers of the two hands to enumerate those who from Plato down rank with [George]. No man, no graduate of a higher educational institution, has a right to regard himself as an educated man in social thought unless he has some first-hand acquaintance with the theoretical contribution of this great American thinker." Fifteen brief chapters feature passages from George's highly influential book and examine why poverty persists throughout periods of economic and technological progress as well as the basis for economic cycles of boom and bust.

This is the second in the series of four core books about the divine economy theory . This is the microeconomic perspective. Human actions are essentially economic in nature. Taking a microscopically close look at the economy - at the level of individual action - leads us into the realm of microeconomics. That is exactly what is meant by the title The HUMAN ESSENCE of Economics and that is what is explored thoroughly in this book. Uniquely, this is done in a way never done before! The divine microeconomy theory is a study of the core, in a manner of speaking, of what is at the heart of the economy. It turns out that it is the human virtues, the attributes of God, which serve as the wellspring of the economy. These are what we value and they are reflected in some degree in everything that we do. All of us participate in the economy either latently or actively. Entrepreneurs are active participants and the ripple effect of their involvement reaches everyone. In truth it is the economy that provides the practical arena for all of us to discover and polish the gems of our inherent capacity.
