Excerpt from Essentials in Ancient History: From the Earliest Records to Charlemagne This series of four histories for secondary schools is intended to serve as an outline of the most important episodes in the world's history. The. titles of the volumes sufficiently suggest the point of view: the effort will be to bring out the things which have really been significant and vital in the development of the race. Personalities and events, however striking in themselves, which have not had a clear and definite effect in the movement of the world, are omitted in order that in the brief space available the essentials may be more clearly presented. In the four successive volumes the series follows the plan recommended by the Committee of Seven: the first volume includes the essentials of history from the earliest civilization in Egypt and Mesopotamia to the establishment of a western empire by Charlemagne; the second volume covers mediaeval and modern European history from about 800 a.d. to the present day; the third volume is a consecutive account of English history; the fourth covers American history. Each volume presents the work for one school year, and an effort has been made so to divide the work that a week may be devoted to each chapter. The numbered sectional headings in the margin show the natural subdivision of each subject, and furnish a convenient means of reference and cross reference. As for pedagogic apparatus, the plan followed throughout has been to print a brief bibliography together with select and cogent topics for review and study. Two series of questions will be found at the end of each chapter: the first a set which ma)r readily be answered from the text or from ordinary compendiums such as cyclopedias, atlases, and the like; the second a set providing for the modern method of search into a wider range of authorities.
