Using "building a house" as a metaphor, he guides you in your own personal journey toward excellence. You can learn how to - lay a strong foundation by developing a mission, vision, principles, and standards; - recognize five pillars of performance that map a clear path toward excellence; - assemble a roof that allows you to measure your progress at the organizational, team, and individual levels; and - improve your ability to lead yourself and others toward excellence. By applying the model in five diverse environments-an organization, a team, a church, a family, and an individual life-Crouch demonstrates its effective use for any endeavor. He also applies his model for excellence to a sixth environment-the United States of America-revealing some interesting considerations. 'It made me cry. It made me think. It made me laugh' Adam Kay Christie Watson was a nurse for twenty years. Taking us from birth to death and from A&E to the mortuary, The Language of Kindness is an astounding account of a profession defined by acts of care, compassion and kindness. We watch Christie as she nurses a premature baby who has miraculously made it through the night, we stand by her side during her patient's agonising heart-lung transplant, and we hold our breath as she washes the hair of a child fatally injured in a fire, attempting to remove the toxic smell of smoke before the grieving family arrive. In our most extreme moments, when life is lived most intensely, Christie is with us. She is a guide, mentor and friend. And in these dark days of division and isolationism, she encourages us all to stretch out a hand. 'A powerful insight into the life of nurses' The Times, Books of the Year 'A remarkable book about life and death and so brilliantly written it makes you hold your breath' Ruby Wax

The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Nurse Manager Engagement: Strategies for Excellence and Commitment is based on the groundbreaking and highly regarded national "Nurse Engagement Study" project funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The book builds upon the key ideas in the study by including examples from Dr. Mackoff’s conversations and key teaching points from her work with several hundred nurse managers in the three years following this innovative study. Nurse Manager Engagement offers a groundbreaking approach—one that distinguishes it from other nurse management books by a focus on building a model of the solution rather than a description of the problem. It focuses on the crucial role of the nurse manager in engaging staff nurses and building a pipeline for future nurse leadership.
