Excerpt from The Famous Allegories: Selections and Extracts for Reading and Study This custom of allegorical interpretation was at once the cause and the result of the universal taste for allegorical compositions a taste which for a time modified the whole texture of European literature. To be able to represent one thing under the similitude of another, to personify the passions and the abstract qualities of the human mind, to give corporeal existence to the virtues and vices, came to be regarded as an exhibition of the highest forms of literary workmanship. For two centuries and a half the most popular of all writings was the allegory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. One of the more intriguing developments within medieval Japanese literature is the incorporation into the teaching of waka poetry of the practices of initiation ceremonies and secret transmissions found in esoteric Buddhism. The main figure in this development was the obscure thirteenth-century poet Fujiwara Tameaki, grandson of the famous poet Fujiwara Teika and a priest in a tantric Buddhist sect. Tameaki’s commentaries and teachings transformed secular texts such as the Tales of Ise and poetry anthologies such as the Kokin waka shu into complex allegories of Buddhist enlightenment. These commentaries were transmitted to his students during elaborate initiation ceremonies. In later periods, Tameaki’s specific ideas fell out of vogue, but the habit of interpreting poetry allegorically continued. This book examines the contents of these commentaries as well as the qualities of the texts they addressed that lent themselves to an allegorical interpretation; the political, economic, and religious developments of the Kamakura period that encouraged the development of this method of interpretation; and the possible motives of the participants in this school of interpretation. Through analyses of six esoteric commentaries, Susan Blakeley Klein presents examples of this interpretive method and discusses its influence on subsequent texts, both elite and popular.

The work " The Allegory of the Cave," also known as the Cave Allegory or Cave Parable, is an extremely intelligent allegory with a philosophical and pedagogical intent, written by the Greek philosopher Plato. It is found in the work "The Republic" and aims to exemplify how human beings can free themselves from the condition of darkness that imprisons them through the light of truth. It is a timeless text whose message fits perfectly into contemporary times when sectarian ideologies still permeate many societies. Furthermore, reading "The Allegory of the Cave" allows for a beneficial reflection by rescuing and presenting important philosophical values to readers.
