Islamic conceptions of heaven and hell began in the seventh century as an early doctrinal innovation, but by the twelfth century, these notions had evolved into a highly formalized ideal of perfection. In tracking this transformation, Nerina Rustomji reveals the distinct material culture and aesthetic vocabulary Muslims developed to understand heaven and hell and identifies the communities and strategies of defense that took shape around the promise of a future world. Ideas of the afterworld profoundly influenced daily behaviors in Islamic society and gave rise to a code of ethics that encouraged abstinence from sumptuous objects, such as silver vessels and silk, so they could be appreciated later in heaven. Rustomji conducts a meticulous study of texts and images and carefully connects the landscape and social dynamics of the afterworld with earthly models and expectations. Male servants and female companions become otherworldly objects in the afterlife, and stories of rewards and punishment helped preachers promote religious reform. By employing material culture as a method of historical inquiry, Rustomji points to the reflections, discussions, and constructions that actively influenced Muslims' picture of the afterworld, culminating in a distinct religious aesthetic.

Excerpt from The Garden and the Fire In Time of War. (To H. D. H.) Ah! if we lose - if this fair countryside, Where sleep our fathers, where our children play, Lay dumb beneath the footsteps of the foe; If here, our English liberty o'erthrown, Ruled foreign harshness, foreign pride of race; And all the heritage that we might leave our sons Were slavery, and shame to face the foe - What comfort then in books, or work, or ease, Or summer twilight on a rose-bowered lawn, And whispering winds among the dreaming elms! Crimson and gold of sunset on the sea Would seem the fires of Hell, were England dead - These fields her grave, our tears her memory. But if we win, and with our victory Gain lands and gold and hatred of the foe, Lust of this world, and blood-stained pride That holds Thy white humility in scorn, Better forego such spoils; - nay, best to know The utter blinding shame of sheer defeat. Lay Thou, O Lord, Thy lash across our backs, Bow these our stubborn heads, and from our hands Strike down the sword. Cut short our triumph-songs And bind our souls with helplessness and fear. Then from the ruins of the land we love, We Thy sad people, scourged with slavery, Perchance might lift our ravaged hearts to Thee. And had we neither house nor home nor king, Nor any name save much as serfs might bear, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Backyard Fire Cookbook offers techniques and recipes to master cooking with live fire and coals, including planking, cast iron, foil packets, and more. There’s no denying the thrill of cooking outdoors and the sense of community it brings when people gather around a fire, and in this book, author Linda Ly will teach you how to master the flames. For the adventurous, start by building a home fire pit. It’s easier than it sounds and requires minimal investment of time and space. If you’d rather not, that’s okay! There are plenty of other options, from vessel fire pits to tabletop grills. Even a charcoal kettle grill will give you more flavor than cooking with gas. Ly also covers everything you need to know about fuel sources (hardwood, hardwood lump charcoal, and smoking wood), her go-to grilling tools and accessories, secrets for stocking an indoor and outdoor pantry, fire making, fire safety, and tips and tricks for grilling more efficiently. You can choose your own adventure with over 70 recipes for ember roasting, wood-fired cooking, charcoal grilling, and foil pack meals. Next-level techniques like dutch oven cooking, grilling a la plancha, and plank grilling are all part of the fun, too. With modern twists on classics and globally-inspired meals like Smoky Ember-Roasted Eggplant Dip, Thai Chicken Pizza with Sweet Chili Sauce, Grilled Oysters with Kimchi Butter, Bacon-Wrapped Meatloaf on a Plank, and Artichoke, Sun-Dried Tomato, and Feta Stuffed Flank Steak, you’ll find a recipe for almost every occasion. This is not a book about low-and-slow barbecue, and you won’t find overnight marinades or complicated recipes, either. Ly aims to encourage easy, accessible grilling that you look forward to doing on a weeknight because, quite simply, food just tastes better outside. Whether you’re a seasoned home cook or a novice on the grill, The Backyard Fire Cookbook will help you make the backyard your new kitchen.
