"American Methodist Worship is the most comprehensive history of worship among John Wesley's various American spiritual descendents that has ever been written. It will be a foundational book for anyone who wishes to understand how American Methodists have worshipped."-Sacramental Life "This groundbreaking study will help to reshape the way that we think about early American Methodist worship and how it connects to more recent trends."-- The Journal of Religion "Karen Westerfield Tucker's exhaustive examination of the history of American Methodist worship may indeed launch a new genre in liturgical historiography: denominational liturgical histories. The genius of this contribution is its comprehensiveness in examining for the first time the worship life of an American ecclesiological tradition."--Doxology

"Angell and Pinn have selected a set of lively and significant examples of social protest literature from A.M.E. Church periodicals and demonstrated that these newspapers and journals represent a critically important location in which African Americans debated vital questions of the day."--Judith Weisenfeld, Barnard College Although the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church has long been acknowledged as a crucial institution in African American life during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, relatively little attention has been given to the ways in which the church's publications influenced social awareness and protest among its members and others, both in the United States and abroad. Filling that gap, this volume brings together a rich sampling of A.M.E. literature addressing a variety of social issues and controversies. As the editors observe, the formation of independent black churches in the early nineteenth century was not just a religious act but a political one with ramifications extending into every area of life. The A.M.E. Church, as a leader among those new denominations, made the educational, moral, political, and social needs of black Americans a constant concern. Through its newspapers and magazines--including the A.M.E. Church Review and the Christian Recorder--the church produced a steady flow of news articles, editorials, and scholarly essays that articulated its positions, nurtured intellectual debate, and contributed to the ongoing struggle for racial equality. Drawing together writings from the Civil War era to the eve of World War II, this book is organized thematically. Each chapter presents a selection of A.M.E. sources on a particular topic: civil rights, education, black theology, African missions and emigrationism, women's identities, and socialism and the social gospel. Among the writers represented are such notable figures as W. E. B. Du Bois, Henry McNeal Turner, Ida B. Wells, Amanda Berry Smith, and Benjamin Tucker Tanner. An invaluable new resource for researchers and students, this book demonstrates both the variety and vitality of A.M.E. social and political thought. The Editors: Stephen W. Angell is associate professor of religion at Florida A&M University and author of Henry McNeal Turner and African-American Religion in the South. Anthony B. Pinn is associate professor of religious studies at Macalester College. He is the author of Why Lord? Suffering and Evil in Black Theology and Varieties of African American Religious Experience and editor of Making the Gospel Plain: The Writings of Bishop Reverdy C. Ransom.

With the decision to provide of a scholarly edition of the Works of John Wesley in the 1950s, Methodist Studies emerged as a fresh academic venture. Building on the foundation laid by Frank Baker, Albert Outler, and other pioneers of the discipline, this handbook provides an overview of the best current scholarship in the field. The forty-two included essays are representative of the voices of a new generation of international scholars, summarising and expanding on topical research, and considering where their work may lead Methodist Studies in the future. Thematically ordered, the handbook provides new insights into the founders, history, structures, and theology of Methodism, and into ongoing developments in the practice and experience of the contemporary movement. Key themes explored include worship forms, mission, ecumenism, and engagement with contemporary ethical and political debate.

The times they are a-changin'. As such, our theology needs to adapt--to be responsive to the changing landscape. The idea for Embracing the Past--Forging the Future: A New Generation of Wesleyan Theology came from our assessment that Wesleyan theology has yet to fully adapt to this changing landscape, and that the future of Wesleyan theology requires the bringing together of old and new voices. The difficult task of balancing between continuity and change--keeping up with the developments of our culture and staying true to the roots of our tradition--requires the dual focus of looking forward and backward simultaneously. In this volume, we have brought together contributions by young Wesleyan scholars (graduate students and junior faculty) as a way of illustrating and articulating a new generation of Wesleyan theology. These younger voices demonstrate the desire to push Wesleyan theology in new directions. Additionally, we have included contributions from senior scholars who have been doing important work and who have already made significant contributions to Wesleyan theology. This is not simply the "old guard" but the voices of scholars who continue to make a profound impact on Wesleyan theology.

"This volume is the first collection of Scarborough's published writings, introduced by classicist Michele Valerie Ronnick. Compiling Scarborough's academic work in addition to his writings on matters ranging from the education of blacks to politics, policy issues, travel narratives, and even black farming, the collection includes pieces of journalism, speeches, and book reviews that reveal a man who defied the odds of his time by his passionate commitment to the pursuit of knowledge."--Jacket.
