The plan adopted has been to follow the histories of the various opera houses, taking each singer as he appeared in opera in America. This book is not intended to be used as a text book, or as a work of accurate history. Undoubtedly also there are some singers who should be mentioned and have not been; but the writer has endeavored to get in all the greatest, and those of the rising singers whose history is likely to be of interest to the public.
