The Historical Development of Legal Apologetics This book will indicate that legal apologetics has a history that is co-extensive with Christianity itself. It is unified by faith and reason and requires a fact-based defense that seeks probable judgment rather than absolute certainty but nevertheless would be conclusive in a court of law. It will provide a comparative examination of the legal model as a form of evidentialism and alternative models or "schools". There are many clear contrasts among apologetic approaches, for example evidentialism is definitely J.W.Montgomery's approach and presuppositionalism is definitely the approach of Cornelius Van Til. However this book is not only about the differences between evidentialism and presuppositionalism since there are other models to consider, each of which adopts a model different from both the evidentialist approach and the presuppositional approach. This work concludes with an assessment of how closely a Montgomery-type legal apologetic accords with the specific needs of the historical era in which it has emerged and ascended from the 1960's to the present. Apologetics is the response to the central claims that the faith faces from inside and outside the Christian religion. The resurrection of Jesus' is assaulted from many quarters. Furthermore large scale secularism and pluralism has resulted with the development of large scale multi-culturism in our society. Legal apologetics focuses squarely on proving the factual reality of Jesus resurrection and is an apologetic which is particularly well suited to our times with its emphasis on factual evidence. BILL BROUGHTON received his B.A. from Concordia University in Montreal Canada, his M.Div. from McMaster Divinity College in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and his D.Min from Trinity Seminary in Newburgh, Indiana. A stirring defense of the faith by one of Christianity's ablest defenders, this is a A re-issue of the classic "History and Christianity" expanded to include DR. Montgomery's essay "Christianity Juridically Defended. Dr. John Montgomery, scholar, theologian and apologist for the faith, developed this book from a seminar he presented at the University of British Columbia. Readable and convincing, the book is divided into four sections: Section One deals with four basic errors usually committed by those who attack the historicity of the New Testament. Section Two defends the accuracy of the New Testament documents, using tests which are commonly applied to any ancient document. Section Three, entitled "God Closes In," is a powerful defense of the truly divine and truly human nature of Christ. Section Four clearly shows that if Jesus were not the Son of God, the only other alternatives are either liar or lunatic. The last section contains DR. Montgomery's essay "Christianity Juridically Defended." The book includes the transcript of a panel discussion in which Dr. Montgomery convincingly argues from the above four points to demonstrate their application for the reader. Here is excellent material for class discussion or individual study, particularly suited to helping young people combat humanistic concepts of the Bible and Christianity.

Traditional apologetics is either focused on obscure, quasi-Thomist philosophical arguments for God’s existence or on 18th-century-style answers to alleged biblical contradictions. But a new approach has recently entered the picture: the juridical defence of historic Christian faith, with its particular concern for demonstrating Jesus’s deity and saving work for humankind. The undisputed leader of this movement is John Warwick Montgomery, emeritus professor of law and humanities, University of Bedfordshire, England, and director, International Academy of Apologetics, Evangelism and Human Rights, Strasbourg, France. His latest book (of more than sixty published during his career) shows the strength of legal apologetics: its arguments, drawn from secular legal reasoning, can be rejected only at the cost of jettisoning the legal system itself, on which every civilised society depends for its very existence. The present work also includes theological essays on vital topics of the day, characterised by the author’s well-known humour and skill for lucid communication.

Dr Montgomery is one of our leading Christian apologists. His writings have influenced several generations of apologists from around the globe. His debates are legendary. This book purports to break new ground apologetically as it assesses Dr Montgomery's work. It focuses on his legal/historical apo- logetic and in the process reframes it for both for the 'tough minded' and the 'tender hearted'. It shows not only the rationality of Montgomery's work but also that his writings pave the way for an apologetic to New Age follo- wers and to those who place experience before reason. A special feature of this analysis concerns Montgomery's apologetic insights on the occult and paganism. This book also breaks new ground as the legal apologetic model has not been previously assessed; it illustrates that a juridical apologetic style has a rich history dating back to the Gospels themselves. The present work should thus be of particular interest to apologists, theologians, philosophers of religion, pastors, and all who are concerned to share the legal/ historical fact of the Resurrection of Jesus - together with its relevance - in a secular age.

Those who give primacy to evidence in the apologetic task have long maintained that (1) this is exactly the biblical writers' approach - maintaining, as they do, that they ""saw and heard"" the things of which they speak - and (2) such reasoning is funda- mental to society in general, as exemplified in every civilised legal system. Henry Hock Guan Teh concretises these vital points by way of the Gospel of John, where the Apostle consistently marshals eyewitness evidence to show that ""Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you might have life through His name"" (John 20:31). No finer or more scholarly support for a biblically grounded, factual, juridically sophisticated defence of Christian truth is available. Professional and lay evangelists - and anyone endeavouring to ""preach the gospel to every creature"" - simply must obtain and be- nefit from this book. And sceptical lawyers, needless to say, owe it to themselves to wrestle with the author's case for the only historical religion that holds up in court. John Warwick Montgomery, Ph.D., D.Théol., LL.D., Professor Emeritus of Law and Hu- manities, University of Bedfordshire, England; Distinguished Research Professor of Philosophy, Concordia University Wisconsin, USA; Director, International Academy of Apologetics, Evangelism and Human Rights, Strasbourg, France Dr. Teh's book is in the same genre as those by Simon Greenleaf professor Dr. John War- wick Montgomery, Craig Parton. Esq., and Prof. Dr. Ross Clifford. As can be seen by the title, Dr. Teh concentrates on the Gospel of John - chapter-by-chapter. His powerful ar- gument can even be comprehended by those of us not legally trained. Recommended. Dr. Rod Rosenbladt, Professor of Theology. Concordia University Irvine. 1517legacy.com This book will greatly help people understand the legal, historical and rational case for Christianity. Dr Henry Teh uniquely focuses on John's gospel and establishes the Case for Jesus Resurrection through the ""best"" evidence principle. This emphases on John's gospel establishes that it is a key text for Christian apologetics. The book is a compel- ling read for those who take 1 Peter 3:15 seriously. And for those who believe Jesus is a fairy-tale, it will cause them to reconsider the fact of his Resurrection. It is well written and a must addition to one's apologetic armoury. Rev Dr. Ross Clifford AM, Principal of Morling Theological College - Sydney, Australia Author of ""John Montgomery's Legal Apologetic"" Henry Hock Guan Teh obtained his Ph.D. from Trinity Theological Seminary, Indiana, USA where he studied apologetics under Prof. John Warwick Montgomery and also at International Academy of Apologetics, Evangelism & Human Rights, Strasbourg, France. With two British law degrees, he was also a trial lawyer and chief law examiner. Presently, Henry Teh is adjunct lecturer in Philosophy, Ethics and Law.
