This book is a first as it unravels the diverse roles women have played in the history and development of geology as a science predominantly in the UK, Ireland and Australia, and selectively in Germany, Russia and US. The volume covers the period from the late eighteenth century to the present day and shows how the roles that women have played changed with time. These included illustrators, museum collectors and curators, educationalists, researchers and geologists. Originally as wives, sisters or mothers many were assistants to their male relatives. This book looks at all these forgotten women and for the first time historians and scientists together explore the contribution they made to this male-dominated subject.

Geological Society Memoir 52 records the extraordinary 50+ year journey that has led to the development of some 458 oil and gas fields on the UKCS. It contains papers on almost 150 onshore and offshore fields in all of the UK’s main petroliferous basins. These papers range from look-backs on some of the first-developed gas fields in the Southern North Sea, to papers on fields that have only just been brought into production or may still remain undeveloped, and includes two candidate CO2 sequestration projects. These papers are intended to provide a consistent summary of the exploration, appraisal, development and production history of each field, leading to the current subsurface understanding which is described in greater detail. Excerpt from The History of the Geological Society of London A proposal was brought before the Council of the Geological Society in November 1904, that a history of the Society be drawn up somewhat after the plan of the 'Record of the Royal Society, ' and that it be issued in readiness for the Centenary celebration in 1907. The project having been approved, a committee comprising the President, Secretaries, and Treasurer, together with Mr. R. S. Herries, and the writer, was appointed to deal with the matter. Mr. H. W. Monckton undertook to contribute notes on some of the manuscript works deposited in the Library, and descriptions of the Medals; Mr. Herries expressed his willingness to verify a copy of the Charter, and to prepare a list of the Benefactors; Professor Garwood promised to deal with the portraits and other illustrations; while the historical portion of the work was undertaken by the writer. The present volume is the result The aim of the work has been to set forth the main incidents in the history of the Geological Society, as far as possible in the words of those to whom we are indebted for records, whether in the official Minute Books, in the publications of the Society, or in the several independent biographies of prominent members.
